Gladys Wakefield Granda nee Harbour passed on Friday, August 29, 2025, peacefully with dignity surrounded by her family.
Gladys was born July 11, 1928, at 134 Sadler Avenue in St. Vital. She was the youngest of three children. Gladys was raised, educated and lived in St. Vital her whole life.
Gladys married Philip Granda on April 19, 1947. They had six children and were married for 28 years.
Our Mother wasn’t just a “Housewife”, she was a chef, a baker, a seamstress, a teacher, a life skills educator, activity co-ordinator, a negotiator, a market gardener, and a referee!
She had many jobs throughout her life time; working at Swift Meat Packers, Certified Seamstress making dresses for models to wear for clothing buyers, Winnipeg Post Office as a Christmas mail sorter, Eatons Grill Room, Hatchery in St. Boniface, a Cleaner for Winnipeg apartment buildings.
Mom was active in our local community club, Brownies, Cubs & Scouts and many events that took place there. She endured and had to enforce practice for violin, piano and tap dance lessons for the four oldest children until one day, the piano was gone and in it’s place was our first black and white television set!
Mom liked Bingo, and would go to St. Emile, St. Eugene to play. She especially enjoyed the bus trips to the states. She had many friends, but several ladies stand out, Lucille, Pearl, Rose and Ellen, they spent many hours together.
Gladys was a kind woman, with compassion for anyone who was having a tough time. Her generosity knew no bounds. Her energy was never ending when it came to helping her family and friends.
Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mary Harbour, her brothers, George and Gordon. Her husband Philip in 1974. Adding to her loss was the death of her oldest son Daniel Granda (Danny) in 2002, as well as the loss of her youngest daughter Katherine Granda (Katy) in 2022.
Sadly, she leaves to mourn and honour her memory: her daughters, Nancy Granda, Norine Granda, Iris Granda, son-in-law Bob Watkins, her grandsons, Nicholas Granda-Watkins, Adam and Jordan Penner.
The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre for the excellent care and making her last days comfortable.
A memorial service will take place at E. J. Coutu & Co., 680 Archibald, Winnipeg Manitoba, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, reception to follow.
