Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I met Les in 1961 at David Thompson Junior High. We became friends and fellow band members, first at David Thompson and then at Elmwood High School. We remained friends throughout our shared post-secondary days at the University of Manitoba; during our first year he even ran a gas pool from which I and two other friends were the grateful beneficiaries. And we maintained our musical bonds as well: during our undergraduate days Les brought me into a dance band with which we played numerous enjoyable 'gigs.' I eventually went off to Toronto to attend graduate school, but Les and I remained in touch over the years. In fact, just this year we became Facebook 'friends' when I signed on to the platform. Les's death was a tremendous shock. He was a fine person and a dedicated and excellent teacher. My deepest condolences to Therese, Matthew, Brett, and the rest of his family. I will miss him. Rest in Peace, my friend. - Posted by: Phillip Hansen (Friend) on: Sep 18, 2025

  • As a student of Les and later a colleague, he was one of the most intriguing teachers I've ever had. He would always say Mr. Otrowwwwwski! He was a wonderful spirit, type of guy that would have been a perfect roommate! Laughing 😃, he left me with many memories, sorry to hear of his passing, he made a mark and memory on so many people - Posted by: Gary ostrowski (Past collegue and student) on: Sep 17, 2025

  • My condolences to the family. Mr. Kurz was one of my favourite teachers. He always took the time to talk and connect with his students. He was truly admired and strong example as to why I became a teacher. - Posted by: Cathy Lanouette (Former Student of Mr. Kurz) on: Sep 15, 2025

  • I am saddened to learn of Les' passing. I was privileged to have taught with Les for many years at Elmwood High School He was a valued colleague, respected by staff and students alike for his professionalism and commitment to the school and student body. Deepest condolences to Therese, Mathew and the Kurz family. May his memory be a blessing. - Posted by: Dave Gillis (colleague) on: Sep 15, 2025

  • We lived across the street from each other on Johnson Ave, attending George V, David Thompson and Elmwood High School together. Along with our neighbourhood friends we spent many summer evenings on the street playing hopscotch, and hide and seek. He was musically talented - singing in a boys’ choir, and playing accordion as a young boy and trombone in the high school band program - where he eventually taught. Therese, Brent and your families, please accept my sincerest condolences. - Posted by: Linda Bruce (Childhood friend) on: Sep 14, 2025

He went above and beyond to help me in my high school years and I never forgot all that he did for me.
