Our dear Wanda passed away peacefully at home on September 28, 2025 leaving behind a legacy of warmth, grace and kindness.
Wanda was born on November 17, 1953, the middle daughter of the late Michael and Jean Cook. Her younger sister Cecilia passed away in 2013. Her beloved husband Steve passed in 2023. Wanda is & will be forever cherished by her sister Donna (Claude) Laurin.
Wanda was an outstanding registered nurse who provided care, compassion and support to patients, co-workers and everyone who came her way. Whether working in the ER, NFA or surgery Wanda demonstrated competency and a remarkable work ethic. Unfortunately, a work-related incident resulted in a permanent injury and later a lower leg amputation. Wanda struggled through this event and other life challenges with strength and resilience.
She had a natural elegance and keen eye for fashion, hairstyling, and makeup. Whether stepping out or enjoying a quiet day at home, she always took pride in her appearance. Her curiosity knew no bounds—she had a passion for gardening, sports, and entertainment, and took a genuine interest in the lives of everyone she met. From neighbors and friends to caregivers and shopkeepers, Wanda was always ready for a warm chat and connection. Wanda was also an animal lover and for years would have a loyal dog by her side.
She also appreciated the simple things in life—her backyard filled with beautiful flowers, birds at the feeder, the soothing sound of her water fountain, and the quiet changes in the seasons. These everyday joys brought her peace and were lovingly maintained with the help of her brother-in-law Michael, whose companionship she deeply valued. She had a spiritual connection with nature and sought to find inspiration in the world around her. She kept thought-provoking, reflective, and inspirational readings close at hand, seeking deeper understanding and meaning. Music and radio programs filled her home, a steady source of comfort and enjoyment.
Wanda and Steve built warm and welcoming homes together—in St. Boniface, Gimli, and later on Jefferson Avenue. They opened their doors to Steve's brother Michael and embraced the responsibility with patience, humour, and care. In later years, Wanda and Steve's health declined but they made it work, creating a home life marked by understanding and quiet resilience. After Steve's passing, Wanda and Michael continued to support one another, building a unique and comforting companionship. Their bond was lovingly supported by the steady presence of Donna, Claude, and family.
Though life brought its share of complexities, Wanda never lost her thoughtfulness. She was often the first to send a card, offer a kind word, or bring a homemade dish to family gatherings. Her gentle soul and generous spirit made others feel comfortable and valued.
Wanda will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially Donna, Claude and Michael, who held such meaningful places in her life and walked closely beside her throughout the years. She will also be fondly remembered by her brother-in-law Bohdan, cousin and friend Joanne Adair, her niece Kristina, and nephews Robert (Danelle), Jean-Paul (Sherri), Jason (Katie) and Daniel.
In accordance with Wanda's peaceful nature and personal wishes, a private service will be held.
