RICHARD ALLAN (DICK) CAIRNS

August 16, 1949 - September 23, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard “Dick” Cairns, who passed away peacefully at his home in Calgary, AB. He was predeceased by his father, David (1979), his youngest brother, Jeffrey (2013), and his mother, Louise (2022). He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine, and his children, Elizabeth and Dave.

Dick was born and raised in Manitoba and spent his teenage years in Flin Flon. He was well-loved and respected by all who knew him. His presence touched the lives of many, across all walks of life, and in matters both big and small. He cultivated, maintained, and nurtured long-term relationships with his many friends.

Dick obtained his first degree at the University of Winnipeg, followed by his Law Degree at the University of Manitoba. He loved criminal law and was a student under the well-know criminal law Professor, Roland Penner, QC. He was also mentored for many years by distinguished lawyer, Hersh Wolch, QC.

Dick moved to Calgary in 1976, where he met Elaine and became a prestigious criminal attorney, highly respected by those in the world of criminal law in Western Canada; well known for his brilliant legal mind and quick retort to difficult questions of law and life. He was the lawyer's lawyer ... there are not many.

As per Dick’s wish, a Celebration of Dick’s Life will be held in Calgary on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

In Dick’s memory donations may be made directly to the Further Education Society of Alberta (FESA), 5421 11 St NE #100, Calgary, AB T2E 6M4, Telephone: (403) 250-5034, www.furthered.ca. This is a charity devoted to helping families build literacy skills and brighter futures.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Richard’s family at www.MHFH.com.

In living memory of Richard Cairns, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.
