With profound sorrow, we regret to announce the sudden passing of Tom in Winnipeg at the age of 51 years.
Tom as born in Portage la Prairie December 28, 1973. He attended Prince Charles School and graduated from Portage Collegiate Institute in 1991. Tom was known for his outgoing personality, and he hit his stride finding a home in playing sports including badminton, volleyball, soccer and basketball and later golf in spite of the issues with his vision. He went on to graduate with his nursing diploma in 1997 from the Misericordia General Hospital School of Nursing and during his career he worked in various roles as a Registered Nurse at Misericordia, St. Boniface and finally Seven Oaks Hospital as a clinical resource nurse in their dialysis unit.
Tom was enamoured when he first became an uncle in 1993 and during their 15 years together, Tom found one of his greatest joys in becoming a stepdad to Cole and Sydney when he married Collen in 2010. His love and devotion to them endured, remaining an important part of his life even after their separation. He gained a respect for nature and a love of hunting and fishing from his dad and was able to pass this appreciation on to our next generation making many lasting memories.
Tom will be forever loved and missed by his mother Jytte Johnston of Portage la Prairie; sisters, Enid (Dave) Masse of Starbuck and Leah (Darron) Hyrsak of Brandon; and chosen brother Justin Lavallee of Swift Current. Also left to love and cherish is memory are his nieces and nephews, Kelsey (Andrew) McPherson, Sydney Sweeney, Rachel and Bryce Hyrsak and Ty Johnston; as well as his wife Collen Blais-Johnston of Winnipeg and her children, Cole Lindblom and Sydney (Ian) Campbell. Tom also will be lovingly remembered by many uncles, aunts, cousins, the Blais family and his very special hunting, golfing and traveling friends. The family would like to give a special thank you to his friend and colleague Sean and his family for the love and support they have shown to Tom over the years.
Tom was predeceased by his father John (Jack) Johnston in 2019 and sister Paula Johnston in 2024.
A time of celebration of Tom’s life and reminiscing will be held in the Crocus Room at the Herman Prior Centre (40 Royal Road North, Portage la Prairie) Saturday, October 25th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. As per Tom’s wishes, a private spreading of his ashes will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully appreciated made in Tom’s name to either the CNIB or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
