In Loving Memory of Lillian “Lil” Atamanchuk

After a brief illness, Lillian passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2025 early in the morning, at Grace Hospital.

Lillian was the middle child and only daughter of Alfred and Christina Glanfield. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son Nick (Karen) and her adored grandson Zachery. Lillian will also be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, neighbours, and many friends she made throughout her life.

Born on June 8, 1935, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Lillian spent her entire life in her hometown. In her youth, she delivered fish and chips on her bike and later worked for the Winnipeg Free Press, where she delivered over 200 newspapers six days a week. In her spare time, she worked at the St. James Bowling Lanes as a pin setter. Through these early efforts, she proudly put herself through St. Mary’s Academy and went on to work for the Federal Government in various departments, eventually retiring from Old Age Security after a 35-year career. She chose early retirement to lovingly care for her aging parents.

Lillian was a woman of many talents and interests. She made her own dresses for bowling banquets and Christmas parties, and she enjoyed knitting and crocheting. One of her greatest passions, however, was photography – she was rarely seen without a camera in hand. Over her lifetime, she owned more than 20 cameras and took tens of thousands of photos.

Bowling was another lifelong joy. Lillian bowled up to four or five times a week in her younger years, served as secretary for several leagues, and met the love of her life, Metro, though the sport. The two married on August 15, 1964, and built a happy life together in St. James, where they remained. In 1966, they welcomed their only son Nick.

Lillian shared her enthusiasm for bowling as a YBC coach for over 70 years, inspiring and mentoring generations of young bowlers. She was also active in many committees throughout her career, including the Federal Superannuates National Association (FSNA).

With the birth of her grandson Zachery in 1994, Lillian and Metro became devoted babysitters and chauffeurs. When Zachery began kindergarten at Buchanan School in 1999, Lillian began volunteering – first as a hall monitor and lunch supervisor, then in the school office, on the parent council, and as a reading helper. Her dedication continued for 26 years, right up to two weeks before her passing. She also volunteered at karate events and served as an assistant mini-soccer convener at Assiniboine West Community Centre for four years. In all, Lillian touched the lives of more than 6,000 children, giving her time and heart to her community.

Lillian was always there for anyone who needed her. Her kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

As per Lillian’s wishes, a private family burial has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the new year.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Lillian’s name can be made to any children’s organization.
