Shirley Stewart, born February 8, 1938, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born in Wakaw, Saskatchewan, and raised in the Hamilton region of Ontario, Shirley followed her heart into nursing, graduating from McMaster University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Nursing. During that time, she met and soon married her beloved husband, John Martin Stewart, on June 8, 1962, who sadly predeceased her.
Shirley was an avid traveler and was able to visit all the continents. She enjoyed meeting people during these trips and learning about their world. At home, Shirley loved to bake and share with family and friends. She did enjoy curling and golf, and when no longer able to do so, was active in many social bridge groups. In winter, she could be found down in Austin Texas and enjoying the friends she made there.
She was the proud mother of four: Katherine Stewart (Kshitij Kothari, deceased), Barbara Gray (Glen), Ian Stewart (Liane), and Susan Jones (Ian). She cherished her six grandchildren—Gryphon and Drayke Gray, Gregory and Leo Stewart, and Kira and Ariana Jones—who brought her endless pride and laughter.
She lived with curiosity, kindness, and quiet strength. Her warmth touched everyone she met, and her spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A private family service will be held to honour Shirley's life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Shirley's memory to the Health Sciences Center - Women's Hospital where she found many friends who comforted her in her final days.
