It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Peniuk on October 30, 2025. He passed away peacefully at Fairview Personal Care Home.
John was born at home in Ukraina, MB, on June 29, 1939. He was the sixth child of Stefan and Anna Peniuk. In his early years, John attended Skala School before leaving to help on the family farm. In 1957, he worked for Fred Chiupka Fisheries in Lynn Lake.
John came to Brandon, MB, in 1958 and worked for a mail contractor alongside his brother Borden until 1972, when he left for health reasons. Afterward, he worked part-time for Altona Homes for 17 years. When the company closed, John then worked for Rosewood Funeral Directors for six years. He remained semi-retired for many years, working part-time as a driver for car dealers in Brandon before fully retiring.
John was first married to Gerry Elchuk, who survives him, and with whom he remained friends. On May 13, 1989, John married Frieda Thiessen Chapman in Brandon, MB, with whom he shared a loving marriage until her passing in 2008. Though John had no children of his own, he appreciated being part of Frieda’s family, including her daughter, Gwen Weenink, and grandchildren, Thera and Tonya Weenink. He leaves behind Frieda’s great-grandchildren, Pryor and Mercer.
John had a warm and friendly nature, and as a long-time resident of Brandon, he enjoyed connecting with people throughout the community. He especially loved going out for coffee and spending time with friends. John had great faith and was a devoted member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. After moving into Fairview Personal Care Home, attending the Kingdom Hall every Sunday morning became one of the highlights of his week, bringing him great joy and comfort. The family is deeply grateful to the staff at Fairview for their attentive care and support.
John is survived by his two siblings, Lea Zenchuk and Gloria Campbell along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Stefan and Anna (Momotiuk) Peniuk, and his siblings, Maria Magdalen, Morris Peniuk, Borden Penwick, Elsie Kiryluk, and Steve Peniuk.
A memorial service will be held on November 15, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 3434 Park Avenue, Brandon, MB.
