MELVIN JASTER

October 15, 1935 - October 25, 2025

Surrounded by his family, Mel Jaster, husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025.

Mel was born on October 15, 1935, in Morris, Manitoba to Ludwig Jaster and Helena (Frederick) Jaster. Mel married the love of his life Eileen (Shaw) Jaster on August 31, 1957, and shared 68 wonderful years together.

Mel was just 17 years old when he started a lifelong career with Abitibi, eventually working 41 years with the company in both Manitoba and Newfoundland. He retired in Pine Falls, Manitoba.

Mel lived his life for his family, and for helping others. He had a core belief that, “there is always something good to find within everyone.” Mel always thought of others before himself.

Mel will be missed beyond words by his wife Eileen, his children Doug Jaster (Kim), Melanie Conway (Gerard), Kari Neil (Rob), and his beloved grandchildren Coby (Rob), Nicholas, Tyler (Josee) and Andrew (Aidan). Mel is survived by his identical twin brother Alvin Jaster, with whom he shared a special bond throughout his life despite living in different provinces. Mel was predeceased by his parents Ludwig and Helena, and his sister Dinah Maughan-Ayres.

The family wished to give a special thanks to Sarah Lava and all of the amazing staff at Benidickson supportive housing, their care and kindness is appreciated beyond what words can express. The family also wishes to thank the Lake of the Woods district hospital staff on 3 East for their compassion and care.

As per Mel’s request, no service will be held and a cremation has taken place.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Dear Eileen and family, We were all saddened to see this news of Mel's passing. But we recall those many lovely "sommer surprises" when you would suddenly roll up on a sunny afternoon for a quick catch-up! Especially that last one, when the chocolate cake was forgotten in the oven, and we ended up eating it "smoked"! Dad loved those visits, and the Christmas phone calls with "the Jasters" far and wide! Always cheered him up immensely! We hope you will find peace and comfort in the recollection of a life well-lived! Love and prayers, The Sommer family - Posted by: The Sommer family ("cousins") on: Nov 04, 2025

  • Our heartfelt condolences to Eileen and all of Mel's family. I don't think I ever saw Mel without a ready smile and of course his infectious laugh, that made you automatically want to smile and laugh along with him. Mel was a great community man who always seemed to offer a hand wherever it was appreciated. He will be missed by all that knew him. Sincerely, Kim and Lynn Sharpe - Posted by: Kim Sharpe (family Friend) on: Nov 01, 2025
