Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD JAY GALLIE
Donald Jay Gallie passed away peacefully at the age of 94 in the early hours of Sunday morning, November 9, 2025 at Action Marguerite Personal Care Home in St. Boniface, Winnipeg. He is the only child of the late Art and Edna Gallie.
Don is survived by his daughter, Liz Moffatt (Wilf), stepdaughter, Christy Preston (Bob), stepson Todd McGreavy (Cathy) and grandchildren Regan, Andrea, Nicola, Erin, Ian, Adam, Sasha. Don was predeceased by his wife, Joan (2024) and son, Andrew (2014).
Don went to work with his Dad in the family grain business, Gallie Grain, in the 1950s after trying a variety of occupations in his younger years. He established himself as a well-respected grain broker and was eventually joined by his son Andrew in the 1980s. After the grain trading floor closed and the trading went electronic, Don took the business home and continued buying and selling grain contracts until 2021 before finally closing the business.
Don and Joan loved their home at 91 Fidler Ave. in St James. They enjoyed the summer sun, attending to the yard and flowers around the backyard pool. There was always a drink in hand during the late afternoon hours and it seemed like no end to the people who would drop by for a swim, a drink or both. Don's love of "bushshirts" was evident when the sun went down and the chill was in the air. He had a collection of shirts, always one for everyone there.
There were many celebrations at the house over the years and many a time Don's collection of hats behind his bar would make an appearance for everyone to sport while listening to the sounds of Johnny Cash, Ronnie Millsap or Willie Nelson. The singing and dancing would soon follow.
Don enjoyed watching sports and could be frequently heard on the phone making a bet with a friend on the outcome of a game whether it was football or hockey. It became a sport in itself. He was a long time (original) Wpg. Jets season ticket holder. He also belonged to the Unicity Tennis Club for many years and pursued his love of tennis. He was a great downhill skier in his younger years and would venture down to LaRiviere Mb. on the ski trains with his father. As a young adult he became a member of the Puffin Ski Club in Wpg. and continued to travel to the ski slopes at LaRiviere where good times were had by all.
For many years, Florida was Don's favourite winter destination, and through the years he owned cottages at Holiday Mountain and then Victoria Beach, but the backyard pool became his favourite destination.
Thank you to Don's friends, neighbours, healthcare workers and family members for their care and time throughout the last few years. It took a community to keep both Don and Joan in their beloved home at 91.
Thanks to the staff at Actionmarguerite for their care and compassion throughout the last year and a half of Don's life.
