JOAN GREEN

(nee SHEFFIELD)

1931 - 2025

Joan Green passed away peacefully in her sleep at Middlechurch Home on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Mike (2001), father Leonard, mother Ethel, sister Marion, brother Roy and many close friends. Left to cherish her memory are her nieces and nephews and extended family members and friends.

Born Joan Shirley Johnson Sheffield in the family home at 166 Cavell Drive, Joan grew up in Winnipeg’s St. James, a neighbourhood she lived in for over 90 of her years. Throughout her life, Joan was an energetic person in mind, body and spirit. She graduated as a Governor General’s Award recipient from United College in 1952 and from there went on to have a successful career, ultimately retiring from a key administrative position in the City’s education system.

It was also in the 1950’s that Joan joined the Winnipeg Badminton Club. There, in addition to making many lifelong friends, she met her permanent “doubles” partner, Mike. They were married in June 1963 and shared many good times at the home they built on Bruce Avenue, frequently hosting parties, card games and regular Friday evening happy hours. During the winters, in addition to cruising in the Caribbean, they travelled to the US with Nevada and California being frequent destinations. Following Mike’s passing, always ahead of her time in her enthusiasm for organic foods, yoga, tai chi, and vitamin health supplements, Joan continued to be active, adventurous and kind.

She played sports and for many more years a tennis racket, curling broom and golf club were never far from her hand. She recognized her good fortune in being able to travel to many parts of the world including Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Panama Canal. Community-minded, incredibly generous and wise, Aunt Joan continuously helped others – our society members in general, her Sturgeon Creek United Church community and those closest to her. Joan will always be in the hearts of long-term family caregivers Dennis and Carol Green, goddaughter Karen Debroni and sister Susan, and all those others she touched during her long life.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff members at Middlechurch Home, Kiwanis Courts and Right at Home who shared time and laughter with, and cared for, Joan over the past number of years.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, December 1, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held in Winnipeg on a future date.

Remembrances in Joan’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.
