MARYKUTTY CHERIAN

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marykutty Cherian, who left us peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Born in Kerala, India, Marykutty of the Vetticad Ottathil family in Paippad Nalukody, Changanacherry was the beloved daughter of Varkey Ottathil and Annamma Ottathil, and the cherished sister of Fr. O. V. Abraham, O. V. Joseph, O. V. Thomas, O. V. George, Thresiamma Varkey, and Annamma Zacharia all of whom predeceased her.

A proud Catholic, Marykutty lived her faith through kindness, generosity, and quiet strength. She studied nursing in India and began her career as a registered nurse in New Delhi. In 1965, she courageously immigrated to Canada and continued her lifelong calling at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, where she cared for countless patients with compassion and dedication until her retirement in 1993.

Marykutty is survived by her husband Eapen Cherian (Karamthanam family, Erumeli, Kottayam), her son Joe Cherian, daughter-in-law Carla Hudecki, and her grandsons, Lucas, Kaleb, and Owen.

She enjoyed laughter, and bringing people together. Known throughout the Malayalee community for her wonderful cooking and her warm, welcoming spirit, Marykutty had a gift for making everyone feel cared for and supported. Her kindness extended to anyone in need, and she touched many lives simply by being who she was.

In her final years, she was cared for with compassion and dignity by the staff at Misericordia Place, for which her family is forever grateful.

As well a special thank you to Divya Robert for the time she spent caring for Mary in her final hours.

Marykutty will be remembered for her gentle soul, her joyful presence, and her unwavering love for her family and community.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow at Mary, Mother of the Church (85 Kirkbridge Dr, Winnipeg, Manitoba). Family and friends are warmly invited to attend.
