ALIKI SDROLIAS
With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Aliki Sdrolias, on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Aliki was predeceased by her parents, Panagiotis and Vasiliki, and her siblings: Kostas and Titika (in infancy); Persephone and Agori (who tragically perished during the Greek Civil War, 1946 to 1949); Foula, Stamatia and niece Evgennia.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 57 years, Giorgios (George); her loving children, Panagiotis (Peter) and his wife Heather, Michalis (Micheal), and Vasiliki (Tessa); her beloved grandchildren, Alexandra and Stefan; and her special nephew, Thomas, along with nieces, Evanthia and Percephone in Greece.
Born in 1938 in the small village of Rachoula, Greece, Aliki was the youngest of five children. She met and married her husband, George, in 1965. In 1973, at the age of 34, she embarked on a brave journey, migrating to Toronto, Ontario, with her young sons to join George and begin a new chapter in Canada. Our family later settled in Winnipeg in 1980, which became our cherished home.
Our mother was the heart of our family - profoundly loving, caring, and endlessly supportive of her three children. Her greatest joy was her family, and she beamed with pride at the birth of her grandchildren, Alexandra in 2001 and Stefan in 2005. She delighted in caring for them, spending precious time together, and watching them blossom into the remarkable young adults they are today.
Aliki was a woman of many talents. A fantastic cook, her home was filled with the aromas of her specialty Greek dishes, especially during cherished Christmas and Easter celebrations. She was also a gifted knitter, creating intricate clothing, bedspreads, and scarves for her children and grandchildren. Some of her projects were so beautifully complex and delicate that they would take a year to complete - each stitch a testament to her patience and love.
Together with our father, Aliki was a fixture in the Greek community, known for her warm and welcoming heart that made every guest feel like family. She and George treasured the friendships they built, opened their home to everyone with open arms, and warmly welcomed new Greek families to Winnipeg.
Our mother was deeply religious and a faithful servant of the Lord. She enjoyed attending church with her family, and in her later years, she would watch liturgies from Greece every Sunday. One of Aliki's lifelong dreams was to visit the Holy Land, which became a cherished memory in 2012 when she traveled to Israel with her church, George, Tessa, and many dear friends. In addition to her faith, Mom was deeply philosophical. She often recited famous ancient Greek quotes, striving to instill morals and ethics in her three precocious children.
Our family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff at Grace Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, Deer Lodge Centre, and Victoria Hospital. We are especially grateful to Father Nick Tambakis, Vera Howden, and Dr. Jason Perche for their kindness, compassion, and support.
Our mom loved all animals. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society, Manitoba Underdogs Rescue, or the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter.
The funeral service will take place on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery.
