Also, most of Anne’s siblings and their spouses predeceased Eric. He is survived by in-laws Edmar and Alice Fast, and Agatha Grant.
Eric was very proud of his children and grandchildren: Greg Toews; Sherry and Michael Wiewel with grandchildren: Mark and wife Gillian,(great-grandson Oliver); Jennifer and husband Bradley; Shelby; and Amanda; Rhonda and Harvey Penner with grandchildren: Nathaniel; Rebecca and husband Tyson, (great-granddaughter Aria); Matthew and wife Kaitie; and Rachel; Tony Toews with granddaughter: Kaileigh.
Eric was born on the family farm in Blumenhof MB, on January 26, 1937. He was a little brother for sister Leona. The family of 4 lived and worked on the farm, just north of Steinbach where Greg now lives. Eric worked with his dad on the small dairy farm as a young boy, but once an adult, went on to work at Fast Brothers. It was at Fast Brothers that Eric found his love of heavy machinery and road building. He also found someone to love, the boss's sister Anne Fast. Eric and Anne were married on November 25, 1961. After a few years working road construction all around Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Eric and Anne returned to live on the family farm and raise their family. Greg was born in 1963, Sherry in 1965, Rhonda in 1966 and Tony in 1969. The family became active members in the Ridgewood church.
Eric ran a successful dairy farm, but also had a love of Belgian horses and became known in the community for hay and sleigh rides with the big horses. After winding up the dairy farming in the late 1980s, Eric went on to work the wood lot at El Dad ranch. There he worked alongside many young men teaching them a strong work ethic. After retiring to Steinbach, Eric spent much time volunteering at the Mennonite Heritage Village, first with the Steam Club and later working at grading the roads and ditches on the grounds.
In the last few years, after giving up his truck, he began his scooter days. Eric became well known for his scooter, with the large baskets and flag, as he patrolled Steinbach and helped keep our city clean.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Cedarwood and Bethesda Place. We appreciate all the dedication shown by the staff over the years he was in care. We would also like to thank Birchwood Funeral Chapel and Ridgewood EMC for helping us out this last week.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
