Frances Genevieve Smyth (nee Balcom) of Winnipeg, passed away peacefully at Grace General Hospital, with family by her side.

Predeceased by her parents, George and Beulah (nee Trites) Balcom; brothers, Cecil, Robert.

Frances was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia. Kingston was her childhood home where she graduated from West Kings High School and then moved to Halifax for secretarial school. Frances loved dancing with her friends at the Greenwood Air Force base, where she met Kevin, her husband of 59 years.

Frances and Kevin were married on December 30, 1961 in Kingston. Four children soon followed, as well as decades of moving with children and pets in tow across the country, from one military posting to another, finally landing permanently in Winnipeg.

Frances loved gardening, travelling, reading and music. She had a curious mind, enjoying crossword puzzles with Kevin.

Cremation has taken place, and a service will be held at Ness Baptist Church on December 11, 2025 at 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to a food bank of your choice would make Frances smile.

  • Frances and Kevin were our neighbours for over 40 years. Frances was always cheerful and helpful, even as her health declined. Our condolences to the family. - Posted by: Mohr's (neighbours) on: Dec 07, 2025

  • I was very sorry to hear that Frances had passed. She lived down the street from us on Belvidere Street for many years. I got to know her a little more every year when she came to the door canvassing for cancer and when I went to her door canvassing for Heart and Stroke. She was a lovely person and very upbeat and resilient even when things were not going that well. Sincere condolences to her family. -Marlene Beaty - Posted by: Marlene Beaty (meighbour and friend) on: Dec 06, 2025
