It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She passed peacefully on December 13, 2025, with her family at her side.
She joins her predeceased parents, Howard and Alice Siegrist, her sister, Joyce, beloved husband of sixty years, Robert, and several other family members. She is survived by her son Kevin, daughters, Diane (David), and Suzanne (Glenn) and son Geoffrey as well as her grandson, Madison (Sophie), and granddaughter, Lauren (David), and great-grandsons, Axel and Austin, and in the loving hearts of her extended grandchildren; Shae (Bryan), Laura (Chris), Chris (Kim) and David, many nieces and nephews and all their families.
Myrle was born in Calgary, she was competitive in her school work, always striving to be at the top of her class. In 1945, the war ended and her father (a bank manager) and her family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where she entered University. She studied Science at the University of Manitoba earning her Bachelor of Science degree and went on to win the Gold Medal in Zoology Science Honours in 1950. She was one of only four female students accepted into medical studies that year. Myrle completed her Doctorate in Medicine in 1955 and continued her advanced studies, graduating as Fellow of the Royal Society of Physicians in Anesthesiology in 1960.
Dr. Gard served many years as Assistant Professor to the Faculty of Medicine at U of M, while serving as a member of the Associated Anaesthetists at the Health Sciences General Hospital and Women’s Pavilion, and later at the ‘new ‘Seven Oaks Hospital. She was always energetic and enthusiastic about her work and witnessed the many fascinating advances made in operating room procedures over the next 50 years. She enjoyed riding her bicycle to and from the hospital during the summer right up until her retirement in 2007 at the age of 80. All this, while raising four children with the help of her devoted housekeeper Mrs. Rempel.
Myrle was a member of International Toast Mistress Council in all offices, as Regional Audit and Budget Committee Member, and finally as Parliamentarian for Council 10. Her hobbies included refinishing antique furniture, sewing, singing in the church choir, swimming, horseback riding, ballroom dancing, and downhill skiing. She and Bob travelled across Canada, the USA, Hawaii and Mexico, as well as many destinations in Europe. She was in attendance at Queen Elizabeth II’s garden party at Buckingham Palace in 1987. After retirement she returned to her former passion for art, sketching and painting with oils, acrylics and watercolours. She travelled to Texas and to Greece, participating in watercolour workshops and won several awards. Up until the end, she worked on her art, drawing landscapes, cats, and imitating the works of Maude Lewis while looking out her balcony window and enjoying her view of all of the wild life on the Red River.
Myrle lived a good, full, and inspirational life. She was dedicated to her work, family, friends and church. In her final years, she was very grateful for her son Geoffrey who was her primary caregiver and to her family and dear friend Heather for their visits. The family extends their thanks to the many medical and home health professionals who cared in her last years. Our beloved mother will be greatly missed but will remain alive in our hearts forever. Rest in peace Mom.
