SHEILA SVEINSON

April 14, 1961 – December 14, 2025

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Sheila Sveinson, at the Grace hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Sheila is survived by her nephew Chase Sveinson and wife Amber; her niece Michelle Severson and her children, Jordyn, Ryder and Trace; her sister-in-law Debbie Gottfried and husband Bryan; best friend and soul sister Serena Rigby and her mother Elaine Fitzpatrick (Sheila’s second mom); her other soul sister, Laura Mulvaney; as well as, many more friends that Sheila held close in her heart.

Sheila grew up in Fort Garry, the youngest of four children and the only daughter. Sheila cherished her brothers, Grant, Bruce and Paul (estranged) and had a special relationship with each of them.

In her youth, Sheila could be found at the ice rink, skating and playing ringette; at the Wildewood Club and in the summer enjoying vacations in Ponemah. Following Bruce into the glass business, Sheila spent her career at various plants throughout the city.

Sheila was predeceased by her parents, Lincoln and June Sveinson; brothers, Bruce and Grant.

We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the health care team that provided Sheila with outstanding care: Dr Nicole Wiens; Hajra Mirza; the doctors and staff of 3N and 3S at the Grace hospital; Gimli Home Care nurses and support; and, her CancerCare Manitoba team - Drs Chowdhury, Banerji and Altman and their nurses, the support team - Manvir and especially Arielle, who Sheila had a very special relationship with.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Growing up in Fort Garry, Sheila was my neighbour on Riley Crescent and our parents were close friends. I spent a lot of time with Sheila in my childhood and I have many fond memories of that time, like numerous bike runs to the candy store, playing various competitive board/card games, swimming at the local outdoor pool, visiting Ponemah and diving endlessly into waves of Lake Wpg, playing hide and seek with the local neighbourhood kids, jumping down our laundry chute and off our garage roof, (just for kicks), making go carts and snow forts, and countless hours spent skating and playing Ringette at the Fort Garry Community Club. (Sheila was a terrific ringette player). One of my fondest memories of that time is vacationing with the Sveinsons in Jamaica when Sheila and I were teenagers. Our parents remained dear friends, but Sheila and I lost touch after high school and i never saw her again. Sheila was a close childhood friend and I will always remember her as a high spirited fun loving character with a great sense of humour. Thanks for the memories Sheila. My sincere condolences to her family and friends. - Posted by: Barb Gottfried (Smith) (Childhood friend) on: Dec 29, 2025

  • I went to school and played ringette with Sheila for many years. She was shy by nature, but still she was a trickster and had a great sense of humour. I haven’t seen Sheila in 40 years but I still remember her laugh! She was a natural athlete, beautiful to watch on the ice and good at any sport she tried. Rest in peace, dear Sheila. - Posted by: Karen Torgerson (Friend) on: Dec 29, 2025

  • So sorry to hear of Sheila's passing. As her grade 5 teacher and ringette coach, I have fond memories of Sheila, the girl who was one of a kind and with a warm heart. Just thinking of her brings a smile to my face! My sincere condolences to all Sheila's family and friends. - Posted by: Bob White (Grade 5 teacher) on: Dec 27, 2025

  • I worked with Sheila during the glory years of the glass industry in the 80's (Bogardus). Sheila was a dedicated employee and well liked by everyone. Interaction wasn't limited to work, but also in a social capacity which provided a multitude of memories from simpler times. My condolences to Sheila's friends and family. - Posted by: David Grant (Former co-worker) on: Dec 27, 2025

  • I met Sheila at Fred Tipping. My deepest condolences to her family and friends who I know will deeply miss her. She will be missed here as well. RIP Sheila - Posted by: Gail Rathbone-Hill (Friend) on: Dec 27, 2025
