Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMargaret Joan Latour
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Margaret Joan Latour, at home on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 after a determined and courageous battle with incurable heart disease, at the age of 89 years.
Joan is lovingly remembered by her children; Joe (Patty), Dave (the late Mary), Ken, Wendy and Mary-Lou, and her two beloved and faithful little dogs, Pearl and Buttons. She was deeply loved by her cherished grandchildren; Valerie (Joseph), Andrea (Stephane), Leanne, Nicole (John), Mathew, Jacob and the late Colter. Great-grandchildren Brooklin, Tobias, Chloe, Amelia, Miles, Barrett and Arlo will fondly remember her. Joan will be missed by her brother, Don Cross, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends from coast to coast.
Margaret Joan Cross was born on June 6, 1936 in Winnipeg to George and Louise Cross (nee Demler). She grew up in Rosser and Starbuck, Manitoba, taught school for a short time, and was an avid curler. In 1955, Joan married the love of her life, our father, Rene Marcel Latour. After 62 wonderful years of marriage, Rene passed away on August 18, 2017.
Being a military family, we moved often and lived in several places across the country from Victoria, B.C. to Shearwater, N.S. Mom was always there to make sure the moves went smoothly and we got settled into new communities and schools. She was quick to get to know the neighbours and to become involved in our many sports and recreational activities. She had a “take charge” type of personality and never failed to go out of her way to help anyone in need.
Mom excelled at innumerable crafts, the more challenging the better, and perfected every talent she pursued to the amazement of all who knew her. She never rested when work was to be done and took every opportunity to lend her skills wherever needed, whether coaching children or making masks and surgical caps for nurses during covid. She was an active outdoors person, always very in-tune with nature, loved hiking, long walks with her dogs, and working in the garden. Staying physically fit and mentally sharp was important to her and she was seldom ever sick. Mom would tell you that she was too busy to get sick. When we were growing up, the kitchen was her domain and she always made delicious home-cooked meals. The highlight was her freshly baked bread which was loved by all.
But most of all, Mom was fiercely protective of her family and loved us with all her heart. In later years, she was instrumental in keeping us together as a close-knit family, even though we were scattered across the country. Family reunions were very important to Mom. The most recent one being in Winnipeg this past Thanksgiving.
The passing of Joan Latour marks the end of an era for our family, but her legacy will live on through the strength, kindness, compassion and moral values she instilled in all of us.
Funeral service will be on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
