John Leslie Mathieson, aged 86, died peacefully on Saturday December 20, 2025, in Winnipeg.
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Grace Mathieson; brother Brian and his wife Marie, and nephew Kevin.
John will be lovingly remembered by his dear wife Gayle; daughters, Marcia (Taka), Karen, and Rena (Chris); grandchildren, Kenta and Emi, niece Lydia and family, nephew Russell, cousin Judy (Joe), goddaughter Bridget; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.
John was born in Winnipeg on March 29,1939. His father worked for Hudson Bay Company and the family moved around a lot as a result. From 1957 to 1964, John worked for Midwest Drilling (Major Drilling), and quit for new work opportunities in Gillam, Yellowknife, and Winnipeg, but rejoined the company in 1970, working there until he retired in 2008.
He met Gayle in Winnipeg and they married in August 1968. After returning to Midwest John was transferred to Thompson, Flin Flon and then back to Winnipeg in 1982.
John was a family man who lived a full life and enjoyed taking his beloved dogs for walks, berry picking, canning each fall, camping, fishing, bowling, watching the Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bombers games, going on road trips around Canada and later taking international trips to China, Japan and Scotland.
He modelled and instilled core values in each person he met. He took care of family members and deeply cared about each person in his life. He was an active grandfather who was always there for them. In the final year of his life, he had support from Home Care and we thank each worker for the care they gave him.
A celebration of life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on February 14, 2026, Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
