Surrounded by so much love, Mom passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, at Meadowood Manor Nursing Home at the age of 96.
Mom was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, George Walter Code, her son Dennis and grandson Bryce. She was the most amazing mother to 12 children, 11 surviving – Don, Doug, Wally, Earl, Cathy, Judy, Donna, Tom, Sandra, Vicki and Keith. She will be deeply missed by all of us.
Gerry was born in Sleeman, Ontario in 1929, one of 7 children. She met Walter in Atikokan, Ontario and they were married in the spring of 1947. Then came the babies, almost annually. Words are hard to find to describe how she cared for all these babies, while cooking amazing meals, cleaning and maintaining a chaotic household; all while moving countless times as Dad’s career with the railway involved several transfers to different cities and provinces.
Over the years we spent summers and weekends with Mom and Dad at Star Lake, Otter Falls,
Spruce Sands and Morden’s Meadow. Mom always made sure we learned to swim and to have fun.
Mom was the matriarch to her 12 children, 34 grandchildren and 37, and counting, great-grandchildren. She had a deep fondness and connection to her grandchildren, all 34.
Mom was a woman of many talents - her writing skills produced two autobiographies for her family. She had a lovely singing voice - memories linger of her singing hymns long after church was over on Sundays. She had an uncanny sense of humour and quick wit, which had everyone in stitches almost daily.
After about 36 years of raising and nurturing all these kids, Mom and Dad took a little time off to travel, spending time in BC and wintering in Tucson, Arizona. She found time to curl, golf, canoe and enjoy spending time in nature - a joy she passed on to her children and grandkids. Mom even found time to volunteer at Riverview Health Centre.
In the five plus years prior to our father’s passing, Mom supported him every day as he challenged through the life altering effects of a stroke. It was an incredible gift to witness the strength and love they shared so deeply.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all of the staff at Meadowood Manor Nursing Home, especially the incredible caregivers on the second floor who became Mom’s extended family. Your caring, compassionate attention to both of our parents will never be forgotten. Also special thanks to Bonnie Thompson, for all you’ve done for Mom over the years.
Funeral services will be planned at a future date.
If friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meadowood Manor or a charity of your choice.
