GARY MATTHEW QUILTY
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Matthew Quilty, beloved husband of Jody and fantastic father of Dylan and Bryce in Selkirk, Manitoba.
Gary is predeceased by his brothers Wallace, Michael, Brian and Roy, and two of his best friends Craig James and Walter Hopp.
Gary was a proud Newfoundlander born in St. John’s on August 24, 1959, into a family where he was the seventh, of seven sons. He had returned many times to visit his family with his wife and two sons.
Gary joined the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) of the Canadian Army at the age of 17, joining his two older brothers who were stationed in Winnipeg. After leaving the military, he embarked on civilian life in Manitoba. Gary held various jobs including working as a welder at Dominion Bridge, having his own siding company with his partner and friend Walter, and later going back to school to be a computer technician. He excelled at everything he did, including being a computer technician that landed him a job at IBM, and he worked there for 20 years until his retirement in July 2018.
In March 1997, he met Jody, the love of his life. In fact, the night he met her, he was late for dinner with his good friends, Craig, Greg and Irene. Once he arrived several hours late, he explained to them that he was late because he met the girl he was going to marry. Gary and Jody were married in January 1998, and then Gary’s real love came, the birth of his sons, Dylan and Bryce. Gary loved being a dad, he always put his boys first and taught them many valuable life lessons.
Gary was a loving, kind man with a great sense of humour who could always put a smile on people’s faces. He was looking forward to seeing Dylan and Kiah get married this summer. Gary will be forever missed by his loving wife and his two wonderful sons he was so proud of. He will also be missed dearly by his extended family and friends.
The family would like to thank our great friend and neighbour, Meriana Brown, for being the family’s support during the most difficult of times.
Gary’s Celebration of Life details will be announced at a later date.
