Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATHARINA SCHOENFELD
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our loving mother Katharina Schoenfeld, who passed away peacefully at Bethania Personal Care Home.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Walter and Harold, grandson Anthony, granddaughter Roberta Gray (Scott), and great-grandsons, Parker and Owen Gray.
Katharina was predeceased by her husband Anton (2006), and her three sisters, Helen, Anne, and Elisabeth.
Tina, as she was more commonly called, was born October 14, 1926, in Verkhniodniprovsk, Ukraine. She was the youngest of four girls born to Diedrich and Helena Dyck. When Tina was 11 years old, her mother died from diabetes. Her father would die a year later, a victim of political persecution. She was then raised by her older sisters and their families.
During the Second World WarI, she fled to Germany along with two sisters. After the war, they left for Paraguay on the ship Volendam.
In Paraguay, she met Anton Schoenfeld, and they married on July 25, 1953. Anton’s family journey to Paraguay from Ukraine and Germany was similar to Tina’s.
In 1954, Tina and Anton left for Canada, eventually settling in Winnipeg and becoming faithful members of the North Kildonan Mennonite Church. Sons, Walter and Harold were born in 1955 and 1960, respectively.
Tina was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandparent. In addition to being an excellent cook, she took great pride in her vegetable garden, especially her tomatoes. A wide variety of flowers could also be found throughout the yard.
The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Bethania Personal Care Home for the loving care they gave Tina in her final years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.
