ERNEST BRIDGES P. ENG

August 4, 1931 - January 15, 2026

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Professor Ernest Bridges, a loving husband, devoted father, and revered educator, who left us on January 15, 2026 at the age of 94. He was a pillar of wisdom and compassion, whose life was dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the fostering of family bonds.

Ernest is mourned by Mary, his devoted wife of 19 years, and his sister Teresa. He was a devoted father to three sons Gregory (Leslie), Kevin (Ulrike), and Andrew (Miyoung) from his first marriage to Stanis who passed away in 2000. Ernest provided them with love, inspiration, and support. He embraced the role of stepfather to Mary’s children Heather (Josh), Esther (Steve), and Cameron; welcoming them into his life and home, he offered the love and support he gave his own children. Ernest leaves behind grandchildren Ryan, Colin, Christina, Nathan, Joanna, Ryder, Tristan, Seth, and Aubrey. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life, and he took great pride in their achievements and growth.

Born on August 4, 1931, Ernest spent his life inspiring countless students and colleagues with his passion for learning and teaching. His 60 years as Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba was marked by his dedication to his field and unwavering commitment to his students’ success. He was a mentor, a guide, and a friend to many. Teaching until the age of 86, he left an indelible mark on the academic community and the engineering profession.

Ernest was a lifelong learner with an ongoing passion to master a fresh endeavor every few years: running, astronomy, skating, cross country skiing, and cycling to name a few. He cleared the land and built the family cottage at Spruce Bay on Lake Winnipeg where he enjoyed many years teaching his children and grandchildren how to fish and sail. His love of fearless learning and sharing of his knowledge has been passed onto his children, grandchildren, and those inspired by him.

The family appreciates the gentle and dedicated care of the staff at West Park Manor.

A Liturgy of the Word funeral service will be held at St. Vital Parish, 1629 Pembina Hwy. at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2026, where family and friends will gather. Committal service will take place at Fort Garry Roman Catholic Cemetery, 826 Crescent Drive at 10:45 a.m., followed by a reception at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ‘Price Faculty of Engineering’, or a charity of one’s choice.

Rest in peace. Your love, wisdom, and legacy will forever be cherished.
