ALEXANDER RONALD COX

August 12, 1932 – January 16, 2026

Al Cox passed away on the morning of January 16, 2026, at Deer Lodge Centre.

He was a devoted and loving father to Jim (Sharon) and Kathy (Scott Jocelyn), and a proud grandfather to Erin, Jordan, Seren, and Deklan. His quick-witted humour, warm smile, and jovial spirit that could brighten any room will be so dearly missed.

Born and raised in St. James, Al attended Assiniboine School and St. James Collegiate. His parents (Anne and Richard Cox) immigrated from Ireland to Winnipeg in 1912. Al was the youngest of his four siblings: Jane, Patrick, Freeman, and Gerald.

Al was an active Scout for over 40 years. This passion started as a boy and followed him long into his adult life where he served in numerous leadership roles, including Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and District Commissioner in St. James, then Brandon, and later Portage la Prairie. He also served as Field Executive for NW Ontario and Area Commissioner for the Central Region.

Through scouting, Al met the love of his life, Millie Johnston. They were married for 49 years until Millie passed much too soon. Al missed her dearly through his remaining years.

Al was employed by the Province of Manitoba for over 30 years, serving as a Regional Manager of Community Services. His career took Al from Winnipeg to Brandon and later to Portage la Prairie where his children grew up and their family called home for over 20 years.

Once retired in 1989, Al and Millie spent most of their time at their cabin on Green Lake. The two loved the outdoors and spent many years exploring the Whiteshell with their dog, Rascal. The cabin held many cherished family memories of fishing, hiking, and a running tally crib game lasting the entirety of each summer.

Al was a devoted member of the Anglican Church. His faith was always central in his life, and above all he loved his Lord Jesus Christ.

On Al’s behalf his family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their care, compassion, and kindness. In keeping with Al’s wishes a graveside service will take place. Al will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Recognizing Al’s passions donations can be made in his memory to an Animal Shelter of your choice or Scouts Canada.
