BRENDA KATHRINE MATTE

February 6, 1952 - January 23, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Matte (née Wiebe) at the age of 74. Brenda is survived by her husband Marcel, her children, Madeleine (Fanny), Jean-François (Erika) and her brother, Thomas Wiebe. She was predeceased by her parents John and Mary Wiebe.

Brenda grew up on a farm near Lowe Farm MB. She graduated from High School in Morris MB. She then went to the U of M where she earned her BA and then a Certificate in Education. She taught for 6 years in Riverton MB. She then returned to the U of M to earn a Law degree. Beside passing her bar exam in Manitoba she also passed the Ontario bar exam in order to practise in that Province.

Brenda loved her flower garden, travelling and crafts.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I am very sorry to hear of Brenda's passing. She was my lab partner in high school and we kept in contact for almost 60 years. Brenda was always the bright one and went on to have successful careers in teaching and in law. The impact she had on her students is clear by the number of former students who posted on this site. She was an avid traveller who enjoyed the history, the art, and the people she met during her travels. The last email I received from her was about travelling and telling me to enjoy it. She also was an avid reader, loved gardening, and loved her family. It's hard to list everything she enjoyed as they ranged from school bus trips from Lowe Farm to art museums in Europe. She was a unique, intelligent woman and will be greatly missed. Sincere condolences to Marcel and family. Stuart Davies Friend - Posted by: Stuart Davies (Friend) on: Feb 17, 2026

  • Dear Marcel, Wilma and I are sorry to hear of the passing of your wife Brenda. You both made a nice couple and it was very obvious how much you cared for each other. Our condolences to you and your family. - Posted by: Don and Wilma Sparkes (Friends) on: Feb 07, 2026

  • My friendship with Brenda spanned over 50 years. During that time we shared many happy memories; travelling together, dining together, shopping together, exploring museums together, but most importantly laughing together. She was the happiest in her garden surrounded by her favourite flowers that she had lovingly planted. She was captivated by art, and a dedicated student of its history. She lived with courage, compassion and endless curiosity. She was a very creative person, a very generous person, an extremely intelligent person, and a very dear friend. Those who touch our lives stay in our hearts forever. My sincerest and deepest condolences to Marcel and family. - Posted by: Gail Davies (Friend) on: Feb 06, 2026

  • Our condolences to Marcel and family. Brenda was meticulous in everything she undertook whether it be scrapbooking, quilting, planning trips, gardening. She was also a long time member of our bowling team “the Mamas and the Papas”. She is missed. - Posted by: John and Pat Lumley (Family) on: Jan 31, 2026

  • I was very sad to hear that Brenda has passed away. I only met her a few times on family trips to Winnipeg but Mom, Evelyn Whyte, talked glowingly about trips to the farm to visit her and Marcel. Condolences to Marcel and family. - Posted by: Sharon Williamson (Cousin) on: Jan 31, 2026

  • Our condolences to Marcel and family. I was a student at Riverton High School from 1976-1979 and remember her well as my teacher. I was lucky enough to go on the French class trip to Europe! Memories I won’t forget. I remember we got to Paris and it was raining so we couldn’t see the Eiffel Tower. I just returned from Paris and got to see the Eiffel Tower! So cool to be back there after all these years! So sorry to hear of Brenda’s passing. Condolences to all. Audrey - Posted by: Audrey Furgala Coates (Riverton High School student) on: Jan 31, 2026
