Ruth Pauls was called to be with her Lord at St. Boniface Hospital on December 13, 2025. She was reunited with her husband of more than 60 years, Ferdinand, who predeceased her in 2021. Ruth is survived by her brother Victor Neufeld, of Calgary; her children, Ferdinand (Tammy), Joel (Sara), and Merril (Karen); as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ruth was predeceased by her brother John Neufeld (Anne) and sister Vi (Herb Kasper).
Ruth was born in Whitewater Village in Manitoba to John and Justine Neufeld on June 21, 1935. She grew up in Boissevain, and her family moved to Winnipeg during high school.
Ferd and Ruth met at church and were married on June 20, 1955. After Ferd finished medical school, they went to the mission field. They arrived in the Belgian Congo in 1960 where Ferd Jr. (1962) and Joel (1964) were born. Merril (1967) was born while the family was back in Winnipeg, then the whole family returned to the newly renamed country of Zaire in 1970.
On their return to Winnipeg in 1974 the family became active members of the Portage Avenue MB Church. Ruth’s faith sustained her and provided a firm foundation for her family. She was a relentless optimist who demonstrated her love for her family in everything she did. Ruth enjoyed travelling, ranging from family trips to international excursions.
Ruth loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her children and grandchildren will always remember the summers spent at Clear Lake.
Ferd and Ruth moved to Sterling House in 2017. Ruth often talked about how grateful she was for the food, staff, and new friends she made there. She particularly appreciated the support she received after Ferd passed, and her health declined.
Ruth handled the challenges of chronic renal disease with grace and humour. She provided support and encouragement to everyone around her even as she dealt with dialysis sessions and increasing frailty. Ruth was a prayer warrior and a believer whose life showed you more than any words could. She was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that made you want to be better, and yet never made you feel inadequate.
Ruth, we love you and will miss you.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on February 12, 2026, at Portage Avenue Church, 1420 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, with refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission (www.aimmint.org).
