JOHN FREDERICK BENNETT

John Frederick “Fred” Bennett passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026, at the age of 96, with his family by his side.

Fred was born at home in the small fishing village of Fortune, Newfoundland, to Effie Poole Bennett and Charles Edward Bennett. He grew up with six brothers, enjoying a carefree and adventurous childhood that created stories his family would cherish for generations.

Before the age of 18, Fred moved to Gander, Newfoundland, where he worked briefly at the airport before heading to the bright lights of Toronto. It was there that he met the love of his life, Suzanna Skinner (from Rose Blanche, Newfoundland), through her brother. They were married in December 1954 and built a life grounded in love and partnership.

Fred began his career with Canadian Avro Aircraft, the maker of the Arrow, until its closure in 1959. He found his true calling working with Molson Breweries, where he advanced through various management roles in Toronto, Regina, and eventually settled in Winnipeg. He was known as the “go-to” person who could solve any problem with calm confidence and practical wisdom.

Blessed with the gift of conversation, Fred could easily fit into any social circle. He had a wonderful sense of humor and delighted in jokes and clever wit. His laughter and storytelling brought joy to all who knew him.

Family was always at the heart of Fred’s life. He treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by those he loved.

Fred found happiness in life’s simple pleasure. He enjoyed going out for lunch, attending church, and trips to Home Depot or McDonald’s for coffee and an Egg McMuffin. Summers were often spent at the lake, golfing and having an ice cream on warm sunny days. He was an enthusiastic fan of golf, hockey and football, always ready to watch a game, cheer on his favourite teams or golfers, and strike up a lively conversation about action on the ice or on the greens. These everyday moments, shared with family and friends, were what meant the most to him.

Poppies, we hope you are enjoying a strong cup of coffee and raisin buns with Nana and your daughter Marlene. Love you to the moon and back.

The family sincerely thanks the staff at St. Boniface and Grace Hospital, the home-care team of nurses and health-care aids, and Dr. McGregor and Dr. Reslevora for the kindness, compassion and wonderful care shown to Fred.

A private family service will be held.
