D.C. (DAN) CARPICK

October 24, 1951 – February 17, 2026

With heavy hearts and profound love, the Carpick family announces the peaceful passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, colleague, mentor, and business leader, Dan Carpick, on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at Grace Hospital. Dan passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and the love, care, and compassion he so generously shared with others throughout his life.
Left to cherish Dan’s memory are his wife, Loretta; his children, Ian (Sarah) and Kelly; and his grandchildren, Jack, Violet, and James, whom he loved so dearly. Dan is also survived by his brother, David, and David’s children Tyler, Breanne (son Carter), and Branden; his special nephew, Trevor Podaima (Kim) and their children, Bennett, Sarah, and Jordan; as well as Loretta’s siblings David Burns, Patrick Burns, Linda (Vince) Coysten, and Cathy (Bob) Bouchard. He is also lovingly remembered by Patrick and Laura’s children, Stephen (Holly) and their children, Florence and Teddy; Rachel Rehberg (Curtis) and their children, Brett and Colin; and Graham Burns.
Dan was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Anne Carpick; his parents-in-law, Ross and Annetta Burns; and his beloved sister-in-law, Laura Burns.
Dan was born on October 24, 1951, in The Pas, Manitoba. He spent his early years being raised in the North before moving with his family to Winnipeg, where they settled in St. James. Dan attended Strathmillan School and Silver Heights Collegiate. A standout in hockey and track and field—particularly high jump—team sports and athletics became an important part of Dan’s upbringing.
Following high school, Dan took a short-lived first job as an orderly at Misericordia Hospital. It was there that he crossed paths with a kind, gentle, and caring nurse-in-training named Loretta Burns and so began a long and beautiful story filled with commitment, generosity, and family.
Loretta made it clear that any future husband of hers would need to be educated, and he followed her instructions, enrolling in and completing the Business Administration program at Red River College. In their early years together, Danny and Loretta spent time with friends, many of whom became lifelong, and enjoyed traveling. Dan eventually accepted a transfer to Denver, Colorado, with Great-West Life, where he helped build the organization’s initial presence in the United States.
In 1985, fatherhood came calling with the arrival of Ian and a move back to Winnipeg from Denver, followed by Kelly two years later. Up to and including his last day, Dan was a present, committed, and proud father who ensured his children always had the tools required for success. Dan supported Ian’s journey with football and athletics unconditionally, as well as all of Kelly’s academic pursuits. He was so extremely proud of the people they became.
An enduring source of wisdom and guidance, Dan’s input was always sought and welcomed for decisions large and small. He was especially proud that Ian chose to follow in his footsteps in the insurance and financial services industry and of all of Kelly’s accomplishments in education and her teaching pursuits.
In more recent years, Dan expressed that same care in quieter, everyday ways – often joking that he had become the family’s “Uber driver,” regularly dropping off homemade meals to Kelly after long workdays.
Over the past 22 years, Dan also developed a unique and special relationship with his daughter-in-law, Sarah. Daily phone check-ins with “Grandpa” were always a highlight, and his practical wisdom and guidance were deeply valued.
Danny and Loretta built a beautiful life together, always focused on family first, and in September 2025, they celebrated 50 years of marriage. Dan served as the compass and guide for the family, while Loretta was the supportive rock behind the scenes, ensuring everything was always in order.
Among friends, Dan was known for his warm, easygoing, and fun-loving presence, someone who was easy to get along with and always had time for others. He greatly enjoyed his many years at Breezy Bend Country Club with the Saturday and Sunday morning “Scheizers” group.
Dan’s presence and reputation in the life and health insurance industry were legendary. Respected by colleagues, advisors, and clients across Canada and into the United States, his 41-year career with Great-West Life was defined by his character and integrity. He was known as a good man whose word could always be relied upon.
The true embodiment of what a leader ought to be, Dan always put others before himself. Many credit him with being instrumental in their own career success, and he took greater pride in seeing others succeed than in celebrating his own success.
Dan’s moral compass, which guided him in both life and business, was simple yet honourable: always do what’s right, and treat people the way you want to be treated. Throughout his career, he earned senior management roles of increasing responsibility. He was often tapped to lead areas of the organization that could benefit from his unique ability to bring people together and guide them toward success.
He was deeply proud of the people he worked with and led over the years, considering them very much like family. So much so that he often cooked for them, eagerly sharing and sampling his latest recipes with the “folks in the office,” as Dan always called them.
Dan retired in the spring of 2016 after 41 years with Great-West Life, leaving a lasting legacy among the many people whose lives and careers he touched.
In retirement, Dan and Loretta enjoyed travelling to explore parts of the world they had never seen. Dan, never one to sit still, soon found his second calling as a grandfather.
Jack, Violet, and Jimmy (James) meant absolutely everything to Dan. He was so proud of them and the people they are becoming.
Dan was a high-performance sports grandparent, always ready to help with a ride, drop-off, or pick-up, often followed by a stop at A&W or a special treat in the car. It’s no surprise that a ride from Grandpa was always the preferred method of transportation for the grandkids.
Nothing brought Dan more joy than standing in the corner of the rink or at the edge of the field, proudly watching his grandchildren compete and begin learning life lessons about hard work, commitment, and teamwork. Dan became a welcome regular among the hockey dads in the corner, and it was recently remarked by one of Ian’s coaching colleagues that “his presence at the football field was such that even I wanted to make him proud.”
Dan’s love for his grandchildren knew no limits, and the wonderful memories they share will carry him with them for the rest of their lives.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the Emergency Room doctors and nurses; Dr. Cloutier and his surgical team; the ICU doctors, nurses, and staff; the 4 South nurses and aides; and Dr. Maiti and the surgery group. The care, compassion, and kindness you offered Dan during his four weeks with you are deeply appreciated. Your dedication gave us more time with him, allowed us to be by his side as he fought, and helped us say goodbye.

“Good to see you, Dad.”
“It’s good to be seen.”

A celebration honouring Dan’s life will take place on Friday, March 20, 2:00 p.m. at St. Charles Country Club, 100 Country Club Blvd, Winnipeg, MB
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to KidSport Manitoba, an organization that was close to Dan’s heart.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Loretta & I became fast Friends in 1974 , when she first graduated from Nursing at Misericordia Hospital. At that time, she was engaged to this tall, handsome orderly with his FuManchu moustache and long sideburns! We started getting together as couples . Danny always had lots of stories to share, and kept us laughing. They got married in September 1975 It was the beginning of a beautiful Love Story . Over the years, as we were all starting our careers, we would enjoy numerous trips together, whether it was a weekend camping or to Grand Forks or to Barbados. During this time was when,we would meet each other's families. It always felt that we kept up with them, after more than 50years. It was sad in1981, when Danny and Loretta moved to Denver, to further his career with Great West Life. But they were never more than a phone call away,as well as trips to Denver. Danny was always such a good provider. After several years there, they were wanting to start a Family and felt strongly that they wanted to be near Family. So back to Winnipeg they came, he rose among the ranks at Great West Life. In April,1985, Ian was born. I was his Godmother. Danny and Loretta were thrilled. They were such excellent parents. Two years later, in September 1987,they had a Beautiful Daughter, Kelly. Danny was involved in all aspects of his children's lives, especially sports. Loretta would hold down the fort, as Danny would have to do quite a bit of travelling for Great West Life. The kids would grow and become such wonderful adults , in large from the dedication of their parents encouraging them every step of the way. It was always family first. As the years went on ,and they experienced the loss of their Parents, Danny and Loretta took on the role of Patriarch and Matriarch. Over the years, Danny's love of cooking became apparent. He loved his trips to the North End of Winnipeg to go to his favourite ethnic food stores. They would host numerous get togethers of their families & close friends. Both Ian & Kelly excelled in school and sports. Danny and Loretta were always there, encouraging them and by being excellent role models. During those years, Danny pursued his love of golf .Ian followed in his Dad's footsteps. Both children were encouraged through University and with their careers. In 2010, they welcomed Sarah into the family. Danny retired after 41 years of an illustrious career with Great West Life. Once the Grandchildren , Jack, Violet and James arrived, Danny and Loretta were always present. They would be there for all the jockeying of getting the kids to their various games and being in the stands , cheering them on. Danny and Loretta loved being Grandparents. He was always so happy to cook for his family and have them gather around. You could always go to Danny and get good advice. Over 51 years of our Friendship, Danny, Loretta and I considered ourselves to be Family of choice. I will miss him so much. Although, I have been away from Manitoba for years, he always welcomed me in there home for weeks at a time. Their home felt like my home away from home. You will be so missed by so many. Thank you for all the years that I have known you. Your legacy lives on through Loretta, Ian (Sarah),Kelly and his Beloved Grandchildren - Jack, Vi and Jimmy. Rest in Peace, my Dearest Friend/Brother. - Posted by: Michele (Shelley) Boyd (Friend) on: Feb 28, 2026

  • Danny has been in my life for the better part of it. My sister has been friends with Danny and Loretta and brought them out to Gimli many times to my Mom's house when I was young. My mother loved and adored Danny and Loretta and always looked forward to their visits. The lifelong bond began. Danny and his beautiful family have always been the surrogate family for my sister Shelley to stay with when she comes for a visit from Texas. She and Loretta would have wonderful days spent shopping and laughing while Danny would make a beautiful dinner for them at home. From what I have heard he was a master at the BBQ. I have kept in touch with them for years and the same back. He was the loveliest, gentle giant of a man who never failed to have me gut laughing in minutes. Danny, we will all miss you terribly. Rest easy Danny. You have earned your wings. - Posted by: Mrs Melanie J Dryden (friend) on: Feb 23, 2026
