COREY MARGARET FRIESEN

(nee NOTHSTEIN)

1956 - 2026

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Corey Friesen on February 21, 2026, at the age of 69. After a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis, Corey passed surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind an echo of laughter that never fades.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba during the summer of 1956 to Wesley and Peggie Nothstein, Corey grew up in Tuxedo and attended Shaftesbury High School, where she was a spirited athlete and integral part of the water polo team. After graduation, Corey attended the U of M, leaving her studies to pursue a life in the southern US. Corey’s love for water was evident, whether she was swimming or simply sitting by the shore. This passion followed her from the pools of Winnipeg to the shores of Lake Corpus Christi, Texas, where she lived for several years and welcomed her first son, Devin. Throughout her travels she remained deeply close to her mother and father, finding her greatest joy in her unbreakable connection to her family.

Upon returning to Winnipeg, Corey’s family grew with the birth of her second and third sons, John and Drew. She balanced motherhood with a career that reflected her greatest strength: her ability to connect with people. From her time as a teacher’s aide to her years in marketing, Corey thrived on conversation. She possessed a rare, infectious charisma—a socialite at heart who didn’t just meet people; she truly sought to know them.

Ever adaptable, Corey pivoted during the rise of the digital age, returning to school to master the ins and outs of the computer and it’s many applications. She spent the final chapter of her career as a customer and sales representative for an online prescription drug company. There, her “gift of gab” allowed her to build a global network of friends, spanning continents from her desk in Winnipeg until her retirement in December 2016.

Corey was predeceased by her beloved parents, Peggie (2016) and Wesley Nothstein (2017), and her older sister, Shelly Kurys (2022).

Left to cherish her memory and carry on her infectious laugh are her three sons: Devin Rand (Catherine Desrochers), John Lang (Sydney Kussin), and Drew Lang. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a woman who could brighten any room and who faced life’s challenges with a smile that never faded.
