VALERIE ANN GAFFRAY

(nee PEMBERTON)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother Valerie Gaffray in the early hours of March 3, 2026 at Lions Place Personal Care Home. Her daughter Jan was at her side when she passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 90. She was predeceased by her brother Richard, and her daughter Karen.

Valerie was born in England and immigrated to Canada. She grew up on Vancouver Island. In her youth she drove a milk wagon, and was an avid horseback rider. In her mid-teens she worked for a few years then joined the RCAF for a brief stint. The stint ended with her marriage to Lawrie Gaffray. Although the marriage eventually ended, they did have three children, Ron, Janet, and Karen. Valerie lived her adult life moving back and forth between Manitoba and Vancouver Island eventually settling in Winnipeg. She closed out her work life as a registered nurse at Misericordia Hospital.

Valerie had many interests; she loved reading mysteries, British ones especially, and watched many such programs on PBS. She loved to tend her garden, loved opera, tried very hard to learn and to speak French. One of the big highlights of her life was to visit France and then Italy in 2015. She also was for many years involved with the peace movement. One of the big disappointments in her life was that there was little peace in the world. Almost right to the end she was interested in world events.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Ron, her daughter Janet, her grandchildren, Angela, Ryan and Christopher, her great-grandson Joluca, her sister Mary, her brother-in-law Mario, her nieces and nephews, her additional family, Ruth and Andrea, and her friends, Jill and Marianne.

A service is to be planned at a later date.

What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us.
