It is with great sadness that we announce that Anton (Tony) Poredos passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, at Seven Oaks Hospital at 91 years of age.
He is predeceased by his wife Anna (Anica) in 2024 and lovingly remembered by his sons, Boris and Vlado (Lisa) and granddaughter Anica. He leaves to mourn many friends and relatives in both Winnipeg and Slovenija.
Anton was born on January 2, 1935, in the small village of Ižakovci near Murska Sobota, Slovenia, to Franc and Marija Poredos. He was one of 13 children in the family and married Anna on May 14, 1967, after which they emigrated to Canada January 5, 1968, for a better life. They were immediately welcomed by the extremally cold weather!
In Slovenia as a young man, he learned how to repair shoes which would be his lifelong hobby in his spare time. He proudly repaired many and had lifelong customers in the Slovenian, Polish and Ukrainian communities, as well as Garden City Shopping Center and the city’s north end. Anton was very generous often charging people very little for his excellent craftsmanship.
He liked being social regularly visiting fellow elderly friends and Slovenians in hospitals and care homes as well as riding the bus around the city especially to Garden City shopping centre where he would regularly meet with friends for coffee or walks. This was important to him and continued even as his health declined. He was always recognized in passing by people who knew him and they would call out, “Hi Tony” or “Hello shoemaker”.
Anton was an extremely hard worker and would help Anna keep the garden and yard looking immaculate. They took great pride in this, and it showed. Throughout his life he worked several difficult jobs including loading train box cars with sacks of flour and grain manually all day for Maple Leaf Mills earlier in life. He very much enjoyed his lifelong job working for CN Transcona as a machinist’s helper in the wheel shop until retiring in 2000.
He particularly cherished staying in touch with his relatives in Slovenia. He frequently called and visited many times, reminiscing about old times and would especially enjoy when they visited him.
Dad was a very active member of the Slovenian community volunteering regularly at various events assisting with BBQ’s and clean-up during Folklorama and community picnics. He also really enjoyed everyone’s companionship at church events and the after-mass coffee get togethers. He was a devout Catholic his whole life and rarely missed Sunday mass even as his health deteriorated.
The family would especially like to thank all the family and friends who visited and spent time with dad including Father Diosdado P. Parrenas (Dado), and the 5th floor Unit 4 of Seven Oaks Hospital for their care and compassion during his final weeks.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church (95 MacDonald Avenue, Winnipeg, MB) with Father Diosdado P. Parrenas officiating. Burial will follow in Transcona Cemetery (5014 Dugald Road, Winnipeg, MB).
