EDWARD (BARNEY) SEGAL

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Edward "Barney" Segal on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the age of 70.

Barney will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his sister, Elaine (Paul) Olin; his nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephew: Jason Olin, Carrie Shenkarow, Jessica and Shirley Ransby; Brenlee, David, Hayley, and Leah Selchen; and Daniel, Jordi, Poppy, and Skylar Olin; Shannon Chisick-Harman, Charlie Harman; and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Sam Segal (1998) and Louise Segal (2006), and by his sister, Dolly Chisick (December 2025).

Barney was born on April 27, 1955, in Winnipeg, where he lived his entire life. He spent his formative years on Lansdowne Avenue, a place that remained close to his heart and was filled with many fond memories throughout his life. Barney was the youngest of four children, and from an early age, he was a spirited and energetic presence, full of personality and spark.

Barney carried that same determination and energy into his adult life. With an unwavering work ethic, he pursued a career in education while working full-time, earning his degree from the University of Manitoba. He went on to dedicate many years to teaching and supporting schools throughout Winnipeg. Barney took great pride in helping students grow, always striving to make a lasting impression on the young people whose lives he touched.

He was fiercely loyal to his family, his friends, and the communities he served. Barney found joy in life's simple and meaningful moments: cheering on the Chicago Bears, sharing vivid stories about his parents and days gone by, riding his motorcycle, and heading out on long road trips in his beloved Jeep, "Sparky," always in search of the next good story.

Barney will be remembered for his strong spirit, his storytelling, his sense of humor, and the genuine care he showed to those around him. His presence filled a room, and his absence leaves a space that cannot be replaced. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 6, at Chesed Shel Emes, officiated by Rabbi Matthew Leibl. Pallbearers were Daniel Olin, Jason Olin, Laurie Gorenstein, Jeff Brown, Gavin Rich, and Mark Lomow. Honorary pallbearers were Brenlee Selchen, David Selchen, Shannon Chisick-Harman, Charlie Harman, Jordi Olin, Carrie Shenkarow, Rick Lousier, Ben Szymkow, Ron Nelson, Leroy Fox, Robert Marvin, and Gerry Dudley.

In memory of Barney, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • On behalf of the membership and executive of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 110, we offer our deepest condolences. Barney will always be remembered as a strong union member who cared very dearly about his coworkers. I first met him over 23 years ago when I first became a member. Thank you for everything you did for your fellow members and for the many times I received your advice. You will be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Richard Peschel (Coworker) on: Mar 25, 2026

  • I was so deeply saddened by Ed's (Barney's) passing.I was a high school friend and often met Ed for a coffee, jokes, and storytelling at the, then, Tuxedo Salisbury House. We would reminisce about our old classmates , which he was a wealth of information.Despite his attempts to portray himself as a bit of a tough guy, I found him to be a teddy bear of a man.He loved his siblings and family, most notably, his father, which he held with the highest respect.I do not live Winnipeg, but I had thought that when I returned for a visit, I would have enjoyed contacting him and catch up on his news.I am saddened and know that life passes quickly, but I will hold his memories dearly in my memory and heart. My deepest sympathies to his friends and family. • Our family lived at 441 Lansdowne Avenue, three houses away from the Segal family through the 1960's and 70's. We all went to Inkster Elementary and St. John's High School. For Barney Segal 1956-2026 Barney, old friend, how will we ride your motorcycle now that one you got for your Bar Mitzvah so bright in our eyes. We wanted to change to belong somehow, the temple so near just steps away, we felt chosen by proximity. How will we go on those imagined trips we drew in air your backyard cars with steering wheels, serious as maps. Your garage held a kind of treasure we believed in. Next door we found large bones in dirt, dinosaurs to us. It was the best time when you were there everything open on Lansdowne Avenue we remember still but who'll lead us now? by Ron Romanowski - Posted by: Ron Romanowski (Friend) on: Mar 21, 2026

  • We played a lot of crib when we weren’t cleaning General Wolfe school. I think I was ahead of him, lol. Sending sympathy to the family. - Posted by: Jim Adamson (Co worker) on: Mar 21, 2026

  • I offer my deepest condolences to the Segal family and friends. Mr. Segal was always our substitute teacher at Isaac Brock. No.. he was more than just that, he made a difference in my life and I will always remember him. Its been 25 years since he tought me but i still remember the story's he would share, the jokes he would tell and the games we would always try to win so we could have some free time in class. He was more than just a substitute teacher he was a friend and someone you could talk to he would always make time for any student that needed advice or just someone to talk to. He always had a smile on his face when he came to our school, we would always tell the office how much we loved Mr. Segal and always made sure he would be our sub when ever it was needed. I am truly sad to hear of his passing. Truly a one of a kind teacher. - Posted by: Mallory Smith (Srudent) on: Mar 21, 2026

  • When I taught at Isaac Brock Barney was a constant presence. He was our favourite substitute teacher. He was much more than that. He and I were always playing pranks on each other. Once I printed out a dozen copies of “Ms. R is great” and had my students paper his new car(being careful not to touch the paint). As I stood watching out my classroom window Barney made a comment as he was standing right behind me! I almost jumped out the window. - Posted by: Darla Robinson (Colleague) on: Mar 21, 2026

  • I’m so sad to hear of his passing. He was my favorite substitute teacher at Isaac Brock. He had a massive impact on my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his guidance. Some students were intimidated with how tall he was, but he was always so kind and funny. He was passionate about kids learning and made it fun. My condolences go out to his family. He had such a big effect in the schools. I hope he knew that. - Posted by: Brit Melo (Student) on: Mar 21, 2026
