Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Memories of Robert A. Watkins My name is Iris and I am married to Robert C. Watkins…..Uncle Bob’s nephew. I consider myself extremely lucky to have gotten to know this amazing man. He was my friend. The first time I met the Watkins clan was at a family wedding. We sat at the same table as my future in-laws, Chuck & Raymonde Watkins, along with Bob, Jean Watkins, Grace, John King. Needless to say, I was somewhat nervous. When uncle Bob moved from his home on Neil Avenue to St. Vital. It caused some confusion as he and his nephew were customers at the same bank, pharmacy and physio therapy centre. Both “Bob’s” had a love for doughnuts and chocolate pudding….…is it the name Bob, or the gene pool at work? We would occasionally pick up groceries for him, he really liked the flyers. He liked the home canning we would take him. He loved raisin pie, green spearmint leaf candies and cashews. Uncle Bob always remembered my birthday, as I share the same birthday as his father Robert B Watkins. He and I used to chat a lot, we talked about WWII, politics, family, etc. We always laughed! I usually ended up telling him that he was a saucy boy, and we would laugh some more. The navy was a huge part of his life. He told me some of things that had happened. WOW! Trust me, there are some wild stories. November 11, 2025 was the first time he was unable to attend the Remembrance Day Service at HMCS Chippawa. His daughter Sandy, his nephew and myself went and watched the service with him. If it were not for men and women like him, who served our country, we would be living in a very, very different world. When you think about the changes this man saw in his life time, street cars, trolly buses, accordion buses, party lines to cell phones, online banking, typewriters to face timing on tablets, the list is never ending. He was very in tune with the real world. Uncle Bob told me more than once, how much he loved his daughters Debbie and Sandy, and how proud he was of them. Watching the rapid decline of this vibrant man was heart breaking. Through it all, he maintained his wit, charm and a healthy dose of Welsh stubbornness. "The night is falling, you have come to journey's end, Sleep now, and dream of the ones who came before, They are calling, from across the distant shore, Across the sea, a pale moon rises, The ships have come to carry you home" You will never be forgotten.
