On April 2, 2026, with his wife and daughter by his side and surrounded by the love of his family, Dick lost his battle with Dementia and Pneumonia.
Dick was born April 16, 1942, to Peter and Marie Makar on McKenzie Island in Red Lake, Ontario. At the age of 10 they left the mining town of Cochenour- Willans moving to Winnipeg. Three years later his brother Ted was born, completing the family.
Dick graduated from Gordon Bell High School in 1960, gaining employment with Canada Safeway right out of school and retiring with 44 years service.
Dick married his first wife Evelyn in 1967, and their daughter Kelly, the ‘true love of his life’ was born in 1971. In 1976, Dick married Betty Henderson, who would be his partner for the next 49 wonderful years. Together we would blend our children, Cameron, Shelley and Kelly to complete our family of five. Dick loved all of his family unconditionally and was an involved father that we were all so fortunate to have in our lives.
Dick coached Little League for a number of seasons for all of the kids. Baseball was his game so when Grandson Harrison played hardball and played it well, Dick was thrilled and tried to get to as many games as possible. His next favourite game was football, and being a season ticket holder for a few years, he was over the moon when grandson Nic was picked up by the Bombers! He could talk football (Nic) for as long as you would allow.
Dick always loved cars, especially Fords, so upon retirement at age 61, he joined the Fabulous 50’s Ford Car Club. He served as Member Coordinator for many years. As he had a 1953 Ford half ton, he also joined The Tailgate Club, enjoying their weekly coffee meetings. Coffee and beer were his drink of choice and he enjoyed both many times with his good friends Linda and Darrell and Bob and Sharon. Thank you for your friendship.
Dick and Betty were volunteer ushers at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and Warehouse Theatre for about 30 years until he had to stop due to poor health.
Dick will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Betty, Children Kelly Makar (Rich), Grandchildren Harrison (Quinn), Brooke; Cameron Henderson (Susan) Grandson Brandon, Shelley Demski (James),Grandchildren Nic (Vanessa, Raia, Cade), A.J., Ava and Tasha.
Dick will also be fondly remembered by many In-laws and cousins in Alberta, Brandon and Winnipeg.
He was predeceased by his Mom and Dad, brother Ted and Mother and Father-in-Law Joe and Leannie Brown who were very fond of Dick.

Dick loved to tease. There were many get together when we were Growing up . Haircuts at his parents place, Lost touch in later years but the memories are always there.
