KISHOR LADHUBHAI MODHA
Following a brief illness brought on by metastatic thyroid cancer, Kishor Ladhubhai Modha of Winnipeg, Manitoba, peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones on April 12, 2026. He was 82 years old.
Kishor was born in Kakira, Uganda, on December 30, 1943, to Ladhubhai and Gomatiben Modha. He spent his childhood in Ramisi, Kenya, before attending boarding school in Mombasa. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi, followed by a master's degree in zoology at Makerere University in Kampala. Drawn early to the natural world and the inherent beauty of all living things, his work as a wildlife biologist at Queen Elizabeth National Park reflected a patient attentiveness and an ability to observe and understand life in its purest moments.
Forced to leave the country he was proud to call his homeland, Kishor and his newlywed wife Divya departed Uganda as refugees during the Asian Exodus and landed on the US Eastern Seaboard for a few years before deciding to emigrate to Winnipeg, where other family members had settled. Immediately after arriving in Canada in 1975, Kishor was offered an opportunity to turn his photography hobby into a career by opening a Sooter’s Studio franchise in Thompson, Manitoba. Over the next twenty-five years, he would gain national acclaim as a skilled photographer and, at the height of his success, expand to three additional studios in Winnipeg. Through his lens, he captured the milestones of countless families and individuals, creating work that was both technical and deeply human, grounded in a belief that every life held something worth celebrating and remembering.
Never one to stand still, Kishor embraced yet another transformation later in life by joining his nephews, Ashish and Prashant, and their partner Raj Bahl, as a human resources executive at Mondetta Clothing. There, he became a steady, trusted presence, known for his fairness, insight, and genuine care for those around him.
In his later years, his focus turned increasingly toward giving back and his efforts helped establish Mondetta Charity Foundation, dedicating his time and energy to improving the lives of others, specifically the children of East Africa who, through no fault of their own, were the most vulnerable victims of poverty, violence, and the AIDS epidemic that has adversely affected millions across the African continent. Helping children in need by empowering future generations to overcome dire circumstances and break the cycle of poverty became Kishor’s and the organization’s guiding principle. It was, in many ways, the natural culmination of a life guided by empathy and purpose.
Kishor is survived by his wife, Divya; his sons, Anand and Premal (Jenna); his brother, Labhu (Pushpa); his nephews, Prashant (Elena), Ashish (Chalnessa), Pratik (Laurie), Ronuk (Mandy), Ashok (Stephanie), and Kamlesh (Manisha); and his nieces, Geeta (Mike), Beejal (Jay), Alka, and Sharda. Watching Prashant’s sons, Jasper and Sasha, and Ashish’s daughter, Anika, grow up was one of the greatest joys of his life. Indeed, he considered them, and all of his nephews’ and nieces’ children his grandchildren, and they, in turn, affectionately knew him as their Dada or Nana. Kishor is also survived by a large extended family here in Winnipeg, Toronto, and in the UK.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at Thompson in the Park Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 1291 McGillivary Boulevard in Winnipeg. Family, friends, and well-wishers are welcome to attend to honour and celebrate Kishor’s life. Shanti Path prayers will be held that evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Hindu Temple, 999 St. Anne’s Road.
The Modha family would like to convey their sincere appreciation for the care, treatment, and support provided by the medical team at GH6, Health Sciences Centre.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mondetta Charity Foundation in Kishor’s memory via the CanadaHelps.org website.

My daughters and I just heard of the passing of Kish. We were so saddened to hear, my late husband Brian Kusano worked at Mondetta and just loved Kish. He had so much respect and spoke so highly of him. Brian and my girls Kristy and Karly all worked the Warehouse sales years ago and always enjoyed Kish and Divya working alongside them. We send our condolences to Divya and family and to the Mondetta family. Our thoughts are with you. This world has lost such a special person, but his imprint on it will live on forever. - Posted by: Paulette Kusano (Husband worked at Mondetta) on: Apr 26, 2026

I was greatly saddened to learn that Kishor Modha, my friend from Jinja (Uganda), and a former Roommate at University of Nairobi (1965-68) suddenly passed away. Having lived with him for a memorable 3 years at the UCN, I consider It to be my good fortune and I am enriched by his close association and affable warmth that continued in the life-span. I found him to be an exemplary humanist, a 'born' Naturalist, a Role-Model endowed with great inner work standards, compassionate, transparent and a trust-worthy 'all-season' friend, second-to-none ! I pray to the Lord Almighty that he be granted eternal PEACE ! May the surviving Modha family find relief and solace while cherishing his memory ! Om Shanti : Shanti : Shanti : JAISRIKRSNA ! -Chandrakant C. Manek - Posted by: Chandrakant C. Manek (Close Friend) on: Apr 24, 2026

Kishor was a true friend and brother. He was the best person I have ever known. We spent many fun times together in Uganda and after Amin ordered our expulsion, we boarded the flight together to Naples, Italy where we stayed in a refugee camp before being sent sent to the U.S. I landed in Louisiana where I have lived since 1972 and Kishor and Divya later moved to Canada to be closer to family. We will miss Kishor's smile, his laugh and his cheerful demeanor. He saw goodness in everyone, made connections with all humans and even with animals. Such a gem of a human being. We are grateful to have been in his orbit. Love to Divya, Anand, Prem and the entire Winnipeg family. - Posted by: Daulat and Vijaya Sthanki and Family (Cousins) on: Apr 23, 2026

Our deepest condolences to Modha family for very sad loss of Kishorkaka. We pray that his soul remains in eternal peace. Om Shanti Om 🕉 Kishorkaka and Divyakaki recently came to our house with Labhukaka and Mitesh for lunch. We shared wonderful memories of his life, career and travels. Kishorkaka was modest, humble and very caring person who lived his life with the family as the centre of all his activities. In many ways his unconditional and empathy towards others was his main purpose in life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Our heartfelt condolences and very deep sympathy to the Modha family; Divya, Anand and Prashant. Kish was born and raised, educatef and worked in Uganda before being forced out in 1973. He lived and breathed Uganda. He strongly supported Ugandan-Canadian Association of Manitoba Inc. (UCAM). We planned, supported and participated in many high profile fundraising events here in Winnipeg. But for him thru his Mondetta Charity Foundation, he extended his charity and support to Uganda and Kenya where he helped kids overcome dire circumstances. Together with other Friends of Uganda, he organized various visit exchanges in both Canada and Uganda. He teamed up with the Principal of Collicutt School, Hajat Fatumah Mbabaali, her school staff, her school division, 7 Oaks School Division, and the School Division's Superintendent himself, Brian O'Leary to realize this. We have lost a father and relative to so many people, a true son of Uganda, a Winnipeger and a Canadian. We have lost a friend. We have lost a great Educator. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Divya, his children Anand and Premal and all relatives. MHSRIEP. We will celebrate his life but mourn his untimely death. In the meantime, below is the link to Kish's work in Uganda. About 1 month ago, the President of Uganda, H E Y. K. Museveni acknowledged his work and love for Uganda. https://youtu.be/Hop0e_ZfD-c Hamza Mbabaali Past President, Ugandan-Canadian Association of Manitoba Inc. - Posted by: Hamza Mbabaali (Friend) on: Apr 21, 2026

Jai Shri Krishna! We don’t have Divyamasi’s contact details nor for Anand and Premal. However we wanted to convey our deepest love and condolences to you all. We are all very upset at the sudden loss of our beloved Kishoremama! We were talking and laughing and shared a meal together less than 5 weeks ago in White City, London and can’t comprehend how things can turn around so quickly! We are left wondering, did he know? Was that a last goodbye? We do not have enough words to describe what a magnanimous, generous, humble, gregarious human being he was. He revelled in bringing joy into everyone’s life around him. The room would light up because of his presence. We are sore at our loss but cannot fathom the loss that Divyamasi, Anand, Premal and all family and friends close to him must be experiencing. Please pass our deepest sympathies and love to them all. We pray for them to be given courage and strength to deal with this bereavement and for the beautiful departed soul to find eternal peace 🕉️ Shanti! Shanti! Shanti!🙏🏽 - Posted by: Pradip & Pankaj Pandit (Pinner, England) (His Cousin’s Children) on: Apr 21, 2026

Kish was a man with a great heart, one that reached far beyond himself, always showing up for family, friends, and anyone in need. His spirit of charity and quiet generosity touched many lives, often in ways that words can’t fully capture. Through his lens, he didn’t just capture images he preserved moments, emotions, and stories that will continue to live on. Those memories he created will remain a lasting reminder of how he saw the beauty in the world and in the people around him. Haji Labib - Posted by: Labib Mudde (Family friend) on: Apr 21, 2026

I mourn the passing of a dear friend who was much more than that to me—a true father figure. Meeting Kish through my aunt Fatuma, Kish welcomed me and my husband us into his life with warmth, wisdom, and kindness, always alongside his loving wife. Our time together in Uganda, especially in Kamwokya and through the work with KCCA, remains some of the most meaningful moments I will always cherish. His dedication to serving others, his compassion for the community, and his unwavering commitment to making a difference touched so many lives. He guided, supported, and inspired me in ways that words can hardly express. His presence brought comfort, his advice brought clarity, and his generosity brought hope to many. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the lives he uplifted and the love he shared so freely. I will miss our conversations and our shared laughter. May his soul rest in eternal peace. My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife and family during this difficult time. Forever grateful for the gift of knowing him. - Posted by: Fairouz Sebaggala (Friend) on: Apr 20, 2026

The demise of Kishor Modha is a very sad loss to his large number of friends, family members and relatives. I would like to share my deepest and heartfelt condolences to all in the Modha family, especially to his wife Divya. I have a pleasure of knowing Kishor since early 1960s, when he arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, to begin his undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi, and to join his two elder brothers, Mulji and Labhu, who also studied at the University. I, too, studied there. Kishor used to visit the Joshi family, with his brothers, and, quickly, like his brothers, became an important member of the Joshi family. We spent many happy and memorable hours to become aware of numerous subjects and topics, and, this was how he, and his brothers, Mulji and Labhu played important roles in my life. Later, in 1970s, when there was a large exodus of people of South Asians from East African countries, the Modha family arrived in Winnipeg, and quickly set up roots. Kishor and his wife Divya, too, joined the family, after a short residence in the USA. I have very a fond memory of visiting them in Thompson, MB, where Kishor had just started his first photographic studio. I remember fondly joining Kishor and Divya, for celebrating their first wedding anniversary in Canada. Over the years, Kishor became very successful, and became an important and active member of Winnipeg. He remained humble, and had been giving back to societies in Manitoba, and East Africa, through his extensive contributions to charity works. We all will miss him dearly. May Kishor Rest in Peace - Posted by: Shashi Joshi (Friend) on: Apr 20, 2026

We send our Deepest condolences to Divya and the whole family on the very sad loss of Kish, a wonderful and selfless soul. His Kindness, humility, dedication to helping the less fortunate and his endless generosity are very rare qualities. I met Kish and Divya thru their work in Kamwokya Primary school and our friendship spanned the years even after I left KCCA. About two years ago he and Divya visited a Ugandan village school for marginalized children that I recommended and soon after initiated the process for Mondetta Charity Foundation start a school feeding program. In February 2026 they both visited us again and on 2nd April this year Kish informed me that he had cleared the funds to start the programe which will transform the lives and education of over hundreds of Ugandan school children. We are devastated by his demise and will dearly miss him. Our hearts, prayers and love go out to Divya, his gentle, loving ,very supportive life partner wife and friend as well as the rest of his family. May God uphold and strengthen you all. It was a pleasure to have know Kish since 2011 when I started consulting work for Mondetta. I knew he was a great guy but that was cemented when my wife Tasha and I attended a Christmas function and were seated across from Kish and Divya and we learned so much about their lives and journey, the hardships they faced and prevailed through coming to Canada to escape genocide and create a better life...and that they did. Kish never bragged about the amazing work they had done in opening the KCCA School and changing the lives of so many children. An amazing legacy and an amazing man...he lived a great life worthy of example, and yet has left us way too suddenly and way too early. Kish will certainly not be forgotten. - Posted by: Mauro Biefeni-Olevano (Worked With Kish) on: Apr 17, 2026
