NADIA HANUSCHAK

April 15, 1929 - March 28, 2026

I am sad to announce the passing of my mom, just shy of her 97th birthday.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Ben Hanuschak; daughter Nadine (Charlie Scholl); granddaughter Allison Boettcher (Jamie); grandson Carl Scholl (Andrea); and great-grandchildren, Jack, Ella, and Charlotte Boettcher, and Ben and Audrey Scholl. She is horribly missed by her sister and partner in crime, Vicky Johnston. Vicky’s son Jeff along with his family will mourn the loss of his favourite aunt. She also leaves many in-laws, nieces, and nephews on the Hanuschak side. Her siblings, Olga (Mervin) Nahirniak and Lily (Art) Presser, predeceased her along with Vicky’s husband Paul.

Mom was born on a farm just outside of Riding Mountain National Park. She grew up in Elphinstone, Manitoba, in poverty. After high school graduation, she attended Normal School in Winnipeg, graduating with her teacher’s certificate in 1948. She worked hard both in her career, retiring at age 65, and at home, providing lifelong support to my dad and I as well as to her parents, her siblings, and their families.

Mom was a people person and was game for anything that would foster new or maintain old connections. Mom pursued many interests throughout her life: sewing, crocheting, reading, walking, curling, bowling, and volunteering. Berry picking was the highlight of her summer for many years. She loved live theatre and concerts and was looking forward to finishing the season at MTC and Manitoba Opera. Keeping active was important to her and the Seven Oaks Wellness Institute was her salvation for many years. Initially she participated in aquasizes and walking the track, but with advancing age it came down to non-structured time in the therapy pool and sitting in the hot tub. Her last trip to the Wellness was one week before she suffered a massive stroke.

Mom was a force. Always saw the glass half full, always up for a party and a good time. Never one without words of wisdom. Loved and admired by all. Thank you, Mom. The world is a better place because of you. I love you.

Flowers gratefully declined. Donations to Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Sistema Winnipeg program or to the Seven Oaks Education Foundation.

Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on May 11, 2026, at the Unitarian Church, 603 Wellington Cres. Ethical Death Care in charge of arrangements.
