ERNEST (BARRY) DUNLOP

July 22, 1934 - April 4, 2026

Barry Dunlop, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, uncle, and friend, passed away quietly and peacefully on April 4, 2026, at the age of 91.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Elaine Dunlop, his four children Karen (Bruce), Daina (Byron), Ross (Jan), and Bob (Leslie) and his much-loved nine grandchildren, Simon, Sarah (Garrett), Shea (Roisin), Sonia, Rowan, Jack, Hana, Dillon and Riley. He is predeceased by his parents Ernie and Betty Dunlop.

He is also survived by his brother Doug, sister-in-law Karen Philips (Ross) and his nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dad’s early life began in Starbuck Manitoba living on the family farm. There he met many lifelong friends and developed a love of farming. He continued to spend most of his free time back in Starbuck with his grandparents and friends after the family moved to Winnipeg.

Dad spent most of his professional career working for CBC that included covering major events including Expo 67 in Montreal, the 1976 Olympics and countless more sporting events across the country as part of the mobile television unit.

Dad graduated from West Kildonan Collegiate. His yearbook entry identifies his goal of being a farmer. Dad achieved that goal, farming at Starbuck, alongside his career at CBC, until his second retirement at age 65.

Dad loved anything outdoors and, together with the love of his life, Elaine, he lived a life focused on his family that included camping trips at Falcon Lake, annual ski trips to Sunshine and Lake Louise, the family cottage on West Hawk Lake and golfing where he was an original member of the “Rusty Zippers” group.

After retirement Dad and Mom had great adventures travelling to many different countries and continents. They wintered in Mesa Arizona for many years with friends enjoying the activities and social scene that kept them young.

Dad was interested in many things, and he could fix anything. He was also a great lover of his dogs and kind and gentle to all animals. Dad was a kind, considerate, selfless man who taught us as much by what he said as by what he didn’t say. Dad’s mind remained sharp until the very end, even though his body could no longer keep pace. We are grateful to have had the man we knew and loved with us to the end.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Brightwater Senior Living for their outstanding care and attention to Dad. We also thank the teams at the WRHA Palliative Care Community Program who cared for Dad in his home, and the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care unit whose care and kindness at the end of his life gave us all great comfort.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Coutu Funeral Home, 680 Archibald Street.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Riverview Health Centre Foundation or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
