MYKAEL SOPHER
With sadness, and profound love, the family of Mykael Sopher announces his passing on April 12, 2026. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1982, Mykael was an adoring father, husband, brother, son, friend, teacher, and Winnipeg Jets fan.
Mykael lived a life defined by his deep love for his family and community. He relished being a father and husband. He is survived by his beloved wife of 12 years Stephanie Sopher, the heart and anchor of his world, and his two daughters, Claire and Scarlett. Mykael thrived in his role as a father. His beautiful girls brought him joy daily and taught him to love in new ways. Even through cancer, Mykael joined his daughters on vacation to Disney World, for winter sledding, kitchen dance parties, and planting seeds in the garden.
Mykael was also loved deeply by his parents, Darlyne and Michael (Sandy), his sister Tabitha (Chris), and parents-in-law (Larry and Gisèle), and by his extended community of family and friends, a large and wonderful group who shared his love of food, music, movies, laughter, bike rides, and hockey.
For over 20 years, Mykael worked as a teacher, specializing in adult education. He finished his career at the Seven Oaks School Division where he worked for 12 years. He had a bright and curious mind, especially for math and science, though also appreciated reading and writing. A music and hockey lover, Mykael wrote pieces for CBC, ran a music blog, and penned a music column for the Icelandic newspaper, Logberg Heimskringla during his 20s and 30s. He loved to travel, especially with his wife. Memorably, they visited Iceland together, and earlier this year, his family travelled to Palm Springs where Mykael expressed gratitude for family, relaxation, and sunshine.
Mykael will be remembered for moving through the world with integrity, grace, kindness, curiosity and his sense of humour. He was caring to many, including the natural world. An avid gardener, he felt at peace amongst his rows of carrots, corn, peppers, squash and lettuces and loved to share his garden and bike rides through the forest with his girls.
He is extremely missed and will be loved always.
A celebration of life is scheduled for April 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cancer Care Manitoba and My Gut Feeling: Stomach Cancer Foundation of Canada.
