JOSEPH ANDREW DOOLEY

June 30, 1929 - April 23, 2026

After a brief illness, Joe Dooley passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, with his family by his side. Joe has lived a long and wonderful life and made many friends no matter where he went.

Joe was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia in 2002; brothers James (2006) and Ernie (2016); sisters, Mary (2011), Mabel (2012), Jean (2015) and Anne (2023). Joe is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife Jenny; his children Lynn (Lee) Nolden, Glen (Lila) Dooley, Janice (Ken) Sim; stepdaughter Lisa (Dean) Becker; nine grandchildren Megan, Cheryl, Melissa, Jonathan, William, Holly, Anna, Jillian and Sheylyn and nine great grandchildren Hannah, Mason, Zach, William, Bryer, Alayna, Elle, Milo, and Harper; sister Dot Burgess; sister-in-law Cheryl Dooley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was born in Hartney, Manitoba, and grew up in the Hartney/Lauder area, coming of age in a time when most young men, including his father and older brother, left to fight in World War II.

At 21 years old, he started working for the Manitoba Power Commission, now called Manitoba Hydro. After being laid off, he began working for the Manitoba Telephone System, a career that spanned 37 years. In his early years working for MTS, he travelled the province to many towns, including Dauphin, where he met Patricia Anne Wells. They were married in 1955 and had a 47-year marriage with three children, Lynn, Glen and Janice. In 1960 they purchased a home in Westwood, in Winnipeg, where he has lived for the past 66 years.

Joe has always been active; participating in curling, golf and baseball, including many years as a pitcher for the Westwood Royals baseball team. He curled for 25 years at the Civic Caledonian Curling Club, followed by 29 years of curling at the Deer Lodge Curling Club. He was president of Civic Cal in 1978 to 1979, followed by becoming president of the Manitoba Past President’s Association. His good friend Bob Harvey curled with him for 54 years.

As a retired MTS employee, Joe volunteered for many years as a member of the Telephone Pioneers. He has also volunteered with Boy Scouts and Girl Guides when his family was involved, he volunteered for 30 years with the Christmas Cheer Board, 33 years with Special Olympics, as well as time with CNIB, Meals on Wheels, Operation Red Nose and driving people for cancer treatments.

Pat passed away in 2002, a loss that is still felt by her family and friends. Joe was lucky enough to find love a second time in his life. Jenny Williams has been a part of our family for many years. Mom babysat her daughter Lisa while Jenny taught school, so our family has known her family for over 50 years. In 2011, Joe and Jenny married, and would have celebrated their 15 anniversary in June. In this time, they travelled all over Manitoba, coast to coast in Canada, and made several trips to the United States. Joe and Jenny also travelled to Europe where Joe met Jenny’s family and was able to explore Belgium and take a memorable river cruise. In their leisure time at home, both Joe and Jenny made many friends at the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans club. When not watching tennis, curling or baseball on TV, they have spent their time in the back yard of their home enjoying the sunshine and gardening in the summer. Many family barbeques were held there, including the traditional birthday celebration for six members of the family who have birthdays in June. We will be missing one person this year.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
