HELEN ZDRILL
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandma, sister, and friend, Helen Zdrill, on April 29, 2026, at Tudor House Personal Care Home in Selkirk.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons Brian (Judy), David (Patsy), and Leonard (Barb); and her grandchildren Jeremy (Mandy, children Malaya and Malik), Laura Beth, Ryan, and Rebecca.
Helen is survived by her sister Irene (Alphonse) Rudniski, her brother Eddie (Irene) Boyko, her sister-in-law Margaret Boyko, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Annie Boyko; her sisters Jean (Alex) Dumka, Madeline (Walter) Saluk, Elvie Kolbuck; and her brother Rudy Boyko.
Helen was born on August 29, 1931, on the family farm in the District of Walkleyburg in St. Clements. She was the third of seven children.
From an early age, Helen loved gardening, and it remained a constant in her life. She tended her garden into her mid-80s, until her health no longer allowed it. She especially looked forward to young potatoes fresh from the garden - one of her favorite foods.
In 1955, Helen married her husband, Walter. Together, they treasured 52 years of marriage until his passing in 2008.
Helen loved life’s simple pleasures: time outdoors, country drives, and working in the yard or garden. She and Walter also enjoyed picking blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and mushrooms together. She also found great joy in visiting with family and friends. Helen and Walter cherished their travels, including parts of winters spent in Arizona or Texas.
Helen was a homemaker and caregiver throughout her life, working tirelessly for her family. Once the children were older, she worked Saturday evenings for Rose Marie Catering and later at Baker Boy Bakery in Selkirk.
Helen was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Selkirk. She made lifelong friends and always said she learned so much from these ladies as the group prepared meals for church functions. She was especially proud to volunteer through this group one evening each month at Red River Place Personal Care Home for more than 40 years, seldom missing a month.
Helen delighted in attending her grandchildren’s school concerts and sporting events, especially when they were young.
The family sincerely thanks the dedicated and compassionate doctors, nurses, caregivers, and administrative staff at Tudor House Personal Care Home for making Mom’s last years dignified and comfortable.
Respecting Helen's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, with Fr. Stefan Tyrawski officiating. A private family interment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund, 303-83 Garry Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4J9. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
