"Be not afraid, I go before you always. Come follow me, and I will give you rest.” J.M. Talbot hymn
Elizabeth passed away peacefully with family at her side. She was tough, but no heart beats forever, even one this truly good.
Of Icelandic heritage, Elizabeth was a dustbowl WWII farm kid in Netley which instilled sensitivity, resilience, and a strong work ethic. For a while she lived in Toronto working as a hairdresser and taking art classes. Elizabeth returned home to help her parents on the farm which is where she met and married Joe at 28. She moved to the Kamer farm in Clandeboye and started a hairdressing business serving friends/clients from surrounding communities. As clients aged, Elizabeth began doing house calls saying they had supported her when she needed it and now, she could repay them. She charged an outrageous $1 for a haircut. Somehow Elizabeth saved money to buy her own piece of land which remains in the family. After being told they would never have children, at 40 Elizabeth and Joe’s daughter Margaret was born.
Family, community, and church were important to Elizabeth. Children and animals loved her. Her many talents included drawing, painting, sewing, knitting, cooking, baking, canning and growing vegetables in a massive garden. She read constantly and was interested in health and wellness, exercise, acupressure, vitamins, herbs, and even made her own natural remedies. Elizabeth cared deeply about the environment and valued education and feminism. She was always up to date on politics, local issues, and world events. Elizabeth was not impressed by the current world situation and believed that we can do better.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Joe, parents Roonie and August, in-laws Frieda and Joe, brother Franklin and his wife Ida, sister-in-law Margaret and her husband Ralph, brother-in-law Ed and his wife Janet, nephew Blair (Lydia), and so many other beloved friends and family. Such is the great sadness of reaching 95 years old having loved and been loved by so many.
Elizabeth leaves daughter Margaret, son-in-law Jason, her greatest pride, granddaughter Kate (Eric), nieces and nephews Murray, Greg (Deb), Craig (Elaine), Candace (Brian), Leah (Colin), Carol (Jim), Roger, Janice (Bernie), David (Susan) and their lovely families.
Heartfelt thanks go out to the incredible team at Kildonan House Assisted Living and to the exceptionally kind, gentle, compassionate caregivers at Middlechurch Home.
A small service will be held this spring. We love you and will forever mourn the loss of your love, empathy, wisdom, and honesty; our moral compass. Please consider making a donation to the Selkirk and District Community Foundation to honour Elizabeth and help the community. Or plant and tend something, she would like that.
