DR. ROBERT (BOB) DUNCAN WALKER

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Dr. Robert (“Bob”) Duncan Walker on May 20, 2026, at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 84, following a 20-year battle with myeloma.

Bob was born in Winnipeg on December 4, 1941, to John and Irene Walker, both predeceased.

He is survived by his dear wife of 58 years, Cheryl Walker (née Herdy); his children, David Walker and Shamim Nalunkuma of Winnipeg, Bill and Bev Walker of Yellowknife, and Susan and Craig Doell of Morden; his grandchildren, Alex Walker (Jon) and Elizabeth Walker (Zach), together with their mother, Joanne; Camilo Droguett (Aly) and great-granddaughter Isla; and grandchildren, Kayden Walker, Yasmin Walker, Emma Doell, and Ethan Doell (Mikayla); and his sister, Heather Mackereth (née Walker).

Bob graduated from medical school in 1965 and completed his residency in Paediatric Nephrology in 1970. He was the first paediatric nephrologist at HSC Children’s Hospital, playing an instrumental role in establishing the paediatric nephrology program in the early 1970s and was involved in Manitoba’s first paediatric kidney transplant in 1972. He worked for 19 years as one of the few nephrologists serving Western Canada, dedicating himself to the urgent care of his many young patients, often at great personal sacrifice. During this time, he trained numerous residents while serving as an Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. In 1989, Bob transitioned to the Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he eventually served as Deputy Registrar until his retirement in 2002.

Outside of his professional life, Bob was an avid gardener and a devoted supporter of Winnipeg sports and the arts. He held season tickets to the original Winnipeg Jets and the Winnipeg Goldeyes, and also enjoyed attending performances through his season subscription to the Winnipeg Opera. He was also very active in the Winnipeg West Rotary Club, serving as president for one year and volunteering in their many charity events.

Bob especially cherished time spent with Cheryl at their cottage near Victoria Beach, where he enjoyed fishing, family gatherings, and the quiet of cottage life.

The family wishes to thank the team at Palliative Manitoba, as well as his oncologist, Dr. Dao, and the staff at CancerCare Manitoba and Riverview Health Centre for their support and care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba.

Per Bob’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.
