JOANNE WARELIS
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joanne Warelis on December 11, 2025 at the age of 68.
Joanne is lovingly remembered by her sons, Andrew and Aaron, and her devoted dog, Milo (affectionately known as “Velcro”). She is also survived by her mother Margaret; her siblings, Henry, Connie, Margaret, Jacqueline, and Scott; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Joanne later moved to Winnipeg, where she spent most of her adult life. She dedicated 35 years of service to MCI, a career she was proud of. Joanne was deeply involved with the Mustang Football Club where she volunteered many weekends running socials and supporting the team.
Joanne was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leonard, whom she loved deeply. Her love of genealogy led her deep into history, where she traced her Van der Ree family roots back to Charlemagne - Charles the Great - of the 700s AD, a journey that brought her immense pride and joy.
Joanne’s greatest pride and joy were her boys. Joanne was deeply proud of Andrew and Aaron and their involvement in sports. She cared deeply for their friends, welcoming them as her own.
Joanne loved traveling west to visit family and spend time in the mountains, especially Pyramid Mountain in Jasper, a place close to her heart. She also cherished time spent on the family farm in Ethelbert, Manitoba, and the many family trips to the Duck Mountains. It was there that Joanne and Len taught their boys to camp, fish, and appreciate the simple joys of life.
As Joanne began her next journey, she was accompanied by meaningful mementos chosen by those closest to her: coffee, dutch droppies, cigarettes, steel-toe Blundstones, her close friend Cheryl’s necklace, her father’s hoodie, a wedding photograph, a picture of their home, and dimes - each a quiet symbol of love, memory, and connection.
In keeping with Joanne’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service.
