HERBERT STEINKE

Peacefully on May 28, 2026, Herbert Steinke passed away to be with his Heavenly Father. Herbert was born on October 31, 1934, in Bryszcze I, Luzk, Volhynia to Albert Steinke and Alwine Hedwig Debus.

He immigrated to Canada with his parents and sister in 1948, where they settled in Minitonas, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg two years later. With the encouragement of his aunt, Herbert continued his education in Canada. In the spring of 1956, he started working at Pioneer Electric Management, later Federal Pioneer and now Pauwels Canada, to work as a core winder. He gradually worked himself up to a draftsman, where he worked for 48 years and he ended his career as a Chief Draftsman. He brought several others onboard to work there and they never forgot it. He retired in 1999 to look after his wife Erika, whom he was married to for 49 years.

Dad loved to travel and every summer he planned to go somewhere during his two-week work shutdown. Some of the places he travelled to was Germany in 1973, which was the first time he was back since coming to Canada, trips to Florida, three more times to Germany, once on a European tour, twice to Mexico, once to California and so on.

Dad’s faith in God and his love for God’s Church was very important to him. He would be there in his spot every Sunday and every Wednesday, until for health reasons, he couldn’t attend anymore.

He will be sadly missed by his children, Gilbert and Hanna Steinke; Iris and Ken Kornelsen; grandchildren, Danielle Steinke (Alex) and Mikayla Steinke (Erin); sister Gerda Krause and brother-in-law Adolf and family; brother-in-law Georg Gutzmann and family and numerous cousins.

A special thanks to Dr. Ian Maharaj; nurses, Diane and MJ and the rest of the staff at the Luther Home, who helped Dad make his last few months a bit more pleasant.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Concordia Avenue Church of God, 705 Concordia Avenue, Winnipeg, with interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Viewing with be held on Tuesday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.

Dad, we miss you and love you. Rest in Peace.
