ELMER HERBERT OLIVER

November 30, 1938 – June 8, 2026

It is with deep sadness, heavy hearts, and all the love in the world that we announce the passing of Elmer at Luther Home in Winnipeg.

His family is left with an irreplaceable void in their hearts. He will be missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Gwen; his daughters, Arlene, Michele (Lorne), and Cassandra; and his grandchildren, Neely, Cheyenne (David), Hunter, and Sloane. Also surviving Elmer are his sisters, Doreen, Audrey (Bruce), Eileen (Albert), Shirley (Albert), and Linda (Willie); his brothers, Lawrence, Leonard (Anita), Edgar, and Willie (Joanne); and his brother-in-law, Bill Hallett. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Maja; his brother, John; and his sister, Florence.

Elmer was born in Stonewall, Manitoba, and grew up on a farm in Lake Francis, in the Interlake. Once he finished school, he went to work for Swift Canadian Meat Packing Plant, then the C.N.R., and later at Border Chemical.

Elmer and Gwen first met at a school Valentine’s Day party when Gwen was five and Elmer was seven. Their childhood friendship grew into a lifelong love, and they were married on June 22, 1963. In 1967, they made their home in Transcona, where they raised their three daughters before they moved to Devonshire House II, where they were warmly welcomed and formed many cherished friendships.

Elmer enjoyed hunting, baseball, curling, cross-country skiing, gardening, and dancing. Through his love of dancing, he formed many wonderful friendships. Elmer and Gwen travelled extensively, including a family trip to Disney World and trips to Europe, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, China, the British Isles, Alaska, and Vegas. They also travelled coast to coast across Canada. Elmer coached all three daughters in baseball and ringette and cheered on all his grandchildren in their activities. Family get-togethers, holidays, and meals with the entire family always meant so much to him.

The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff at Luther Home, who helped make Elmer’s last few months comfortable.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall, Manitoba. Reception to follow at the Stonewall Legion.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elmer’s memory to the Alzheimer Society Manitoba.

Gone are the days we could share a hug, a kiss, a laugh, or a dance, but the memories will never be forgotten.
