Murray Kadys passed away on June 19, 2026. He was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, on January 12, 1945, to Sam Kadys of Poland and Bella Petraikaite of Lithuania, who met in Halifax after immigrating to Canada in 1923.
As a young man, Murray worked with a travelling carnival affiliated with the World Showmen’s Association, an experience that took him across the United States and became one of the more colourful chapters of his life. He later attended Dalhousie University.
In 1985, Murray moved to Thompson, Manitoba, where he built a long career in real estate after taking over a friend’s business. He remained in Thompson until moving to Winnipeg in 2016.
Murray had a deep interest in politics and world history, and a particular fondness for smelts and for smoked salmon with cream cheese on a toasted bagel. He was also a committed Rotarian who contributed generously to the club’s work in Thompson. He helped with fundraisers such as Christmas hampers and bingos and supported students visiting through Rotary exchange programs.
Murray kept the laws of God and man to the best of his ability and, according to the people he knew, was a true mensch.
He is survived by his wife, Dianna McGavin, and his cousin, Marsha Heller. He was also fortunate to have many close friends, including Malcolm and Theresa McDonald and their sons, Graham and Donald.
A funeral was held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on June 23, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jewish Child and Family Service.
