INGEBORG (INGE) GROSSNEGGER

We are sad to announce Inge's passing on June 19, 2026, at the age of 96. She was predeceased by her husband Franz of 56 years, her first born baby son Franzi, her parents Bartl Ferjan and Maria Slaper, and brothers Herbert, Max, Willi, and Kurt.

Mom is lovingly remembered by her son Gerry, daughter Evelyn Carruthers (Tony) and grandson Kevin, her sisters Sonja (Roland) and Linde (Elisabeth), four sisters-in-law (Lotte, Maria, Maria, Christina) and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Mom was born August 27, 1929, in Rechberg, Austria. She was great with math in school and soon tutored and marked papers. She worked in Klagenfurt when she met Dad at an outdoor dance in 1951. They married 6 months later.

In 1958 they immigrated to Winnipeg. She worked for $0.48/hr before working in the Greb shoe factory, and before starting Frank Grossnegger & Son Masonry (housefronts, fireplaces, and other stone and brick work). Mom used her math skills here and at Masonic Temple, where she worked as bookkeeper (and hostess) from 1988 to 1991. They did return to Austria 11 times over the years, but also visited Mexico, Jamaica, and many places throughout Canada and the USA.

Mom and Dad were avid members of the Austrian Club, where mom volunteered as treasurer, helped run the Austrian Pavillion at Folklorama, and brought in the Austrian Police Choir to perform for the community.

When not doing all the house and yard work she insisted on, Mom loved to read, play her favourite German card game, and watch a few soap operas, game shows, and Judge Judy! She loved animals, especially cats, and weekly family dinner and game nights.

In January 2026, Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Thankfully, she was able to stay in her home for most of this journey, as she wanted. Then she was at Riverview Health Centre for a week with her daughter and beloved cat Morty.

Mom passed peacefully with her son and Tony also present. We thank the staff at WRHA Palliative Care, WRHA Home Care, St. Boniface Hospital, Riverview Health Centre, and friends and family, for all the help, support and kindness over these months.
