MARLENE KOVACS

(nee PLISZKA)

Peacefully, surrounded by family, Mom passed away at Grace Hospital June 12.

Mom was born February 8,1941, the first child to Tony "The Telephone Man" and Stella Pliszka. Marlene grew up in Oakville, Manitoba while her High School years were in Portage La Prairie. Mom was an excellent student; she loved to read and write. Marlene was very proud to be called upon to be her High School graduation class Valedictorian. After graduation, Mom moved to Winnipeg to further her education at MIT (RRCC), which is where she met her future husband.

Upon marriage they purchased a home in St James, and this is where we were raised as children and Mom forged friendships all around our Bay. Mom loved her pets, she made sure we grew up with Smoky, Lady, Tramp, Bob, Maxine and later she had Binou. Marlene was a hockey and a water polo mom. She was our biggest and loudest cheerleader at all our sporting events. A memory and a joy forever. Mom remarried and she was truly happy. Mom eventually moved to a Seniors condo where she resided for 17 years and made many lasting friendships with her neighbors. Mom was like that; she could enter a room and strike up a conversation with anyone and before they parted, she had made a new friend many were lasting friendships.

Surviving Mom is her brother Tony (Meri), sons Richard (Kim), Gerry (Marnie), daughter Jo Anne (Dave) and grandchildren Anna, Curtis, Mitchel, Leanne, Danica, bonus grandchildren Emily, Braeden, Tavis.

Our gratitude and appreciation are extended to all Mom’s doctors, nurses, health care aides and especially her homecare men and women who all worked to keep Mom in her home to her final days. Also, thank you to her friends who came to visit her at home and in hospital.

Thank you from our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Winnipeg Humane society or any women's / family shelter of your choice.

A celebration of life will be held 2:00 p.m. July 24 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
