BARRY ALLEN YANCHYSHYN

Barry’s official date of death is April 30, 2026, but our family is only now coming to terms with this huge loss. In Halifax since 2007, he lived alone since 2018 when his wife Bette died. Following his will, family distributed his cremated remains around their shared gravesite in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, on July 6.

Barry was born in Winnipeg on May 15, 1952, and lived with his parents and older brother at Argyle and Matlock before they moved to Winnipeg in 1959. After schooling in the suburb of St. Vital, he received his undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies (Faculty of Architecture) at the University of Manitoba. He followed his dream of becoming an architect and urban designer by completing his Masters of Landscape Architecture In Berkeley, California in 1981. Because of significant and creative projects in Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Annapolis Royal (Nova Scotia) and Halifax, he was bestowed with several prestigious awards, e.g. induction as a Fellow into the College of Fellows in Landscape Architecture in 2004. He retired in February 2019, having described his professional passion as "the creation of exceptional living environments that raise the quality of life for his clients and the larger community."

Barry was married to Bette Lou (nee Norman), “the love of his life" for 38 years. He was predeceased by her (2018) and by his father Walter (1997). He is survived by his mother Anne Yanchyshyn (Winnipeg), now almost 99; his brother Gordon and sister-in-law Candace (Toronto), with their sons and families: Matt (Louise), Killian and Fred (Brooklyn, NY), and Ben (Rachel), Alice and Henry (Toronto); and his daughter Julie Anne Kilcoyne and children, Emma, Luke, Adam (Scotland).

 Forever loved, may Barry rest in peace.
