We have lost our brother and friend. There is a permanent wound in our hearts and a hole in our lives where he always held a special place.
After a long and grueling battle with cancer, Clinton passed at St. Boniface Hospital on Sunday, July 12, 2026. He will now join his mum, Linda Smith; his dad Roger Smith; and his dear brother Warren.
Clinton was 71, but he lived as though he was 31, endlessly participating in activities like golf, fishing and curling, baseball, and many other games and sports. He also loved the family games at his sisters’ cottages on Lake Winnipeg, where he was usually the best partner. And, of course, there was always time for a game of crib or any game that included bantering and laughing.
Clint was a long-standing member and Executive of the ANAVETS ROCKWOOD, UNIT 303 (the Rockwood). This was Clint’s “Club,” where he played games, ate dinners, danced, and enjoyed a few drinks with the many friends he made over the years. He loved the fun and excitement of competing in the games offered at the Rockwood.
Clint was a North End boy, graduating from Sisler High School, another place where he formed a group of tight-knit loyal friends who remained a part of his life until he passed. He bought season tickets to the Bombers and attended Jets games with buddies that he had known for many years. He grew up in a family of nine kids, where there was permanently a brother to play with or get in trouble with.
Cuba was his love and annual holiday place where he made many friends. He was often invited to parties and dinners with Cuban families. He immersed himself in the culture and worked on learning some Spanish. On each trip, he took extra suitcases filled with shoes, toys, clothes, and essentials for local kids. Several of Clint’s friends went with him to Cuba, making up a Winnipeg contingent to join the locals at the beaches and parties.
Clint cherished the fun times he spent with his friends - fishing trips and golf games and BBQs. But, by far, his favourite event was the annual family crib tournament. His niece Ivy came up with the idea but Clint was the organizer, and it included all the family who played crib, nearly everyone. His family was the most important thing in his life. No one in our family can talk about Clint without expressing how generous he was, especially with his nieces and nephews whom he loved so much.
He will be missed by all of them: Simone, Keely, Cale, Nick, Jessi, Margo, Lesly, Spencer, Ivy, Lydia, Lenise, and Alaina. For his siblings - Brian (Shirley), Rhonda (John), Fletcher, Karen, Laird (Rita), Lisa (Mark), and Tina - Clint’s passing has left an enormous cavity in our lives and a deep sadness to struggle with for years to come.
